Free Monster Skills List Examples

Free Monster Skills
The list of free monster skills you get access to when making a monster is mostly down to Author choice, however I do ask that you keep what I'm about to type in mind. A starter skill should not be anything OP unless you are making the monster Unique and a high Rank. Rank affects the quality of the skills a monster can have as it's first. Higher rank means better skills to choose from. However all lower Rank skills are still available to higher Rank monsters as well. Different variants also can have different skills relating to their theme. So a "metal slime" might have extra defensive skills compared to a "magislime" which would have extra magic skills, etc.

I'll use three groups of monsters for all the Ranks. The slime group, the beast group, and the elemental group. These are not "official" names for species or anything, but I want to give you an idea of what I'm doing. So I'll use a slime variant, a beast of some sort, and an elemental for each rank.

Common Rank examples:
Slimes: Amorphous (Skill allows minor manipulation of gelatinous body, allowing it to squeeze through small spaces or change its shape a little. It is not full transformation or shapeshifting.), Bash (Adds sudden force and speed to the slime's movement, launching it at it's target and hardening it's skin to cause damage. It's skin's toughness returns to normal when the skill ends.), Acid Skin (Does minor damage to anything that touches it, akin to acid).

Mole: Earth Manipulation (Allows the mole to manipulate dirt and stone. At this rank it is only useful for moving it out of the way for easier digging.), Sharp Claws (Name says it all. Claws are a little sharper than usual, increasing damage.), Tremor Vision (Can see the vibrations of the earth around it, giving it an idea of what's around it, even while underground.)

Ember: Fire Manipulation (Can manipulate fire. At this rank it can cause a small spark to light or snuff out a candle or torch), Flare (Can suddenly increase it's fire's intensity in short bursts to deal damage to those nearby), Enflame (Can absorb fire to temporarily increase the damage of any of its elemental attacks by a small amount.)

Uncommon Rank Examples
Slime: Pseudopods (Can create tentacles of slime to attack or insnare it's targets.), Slime Shot (Can fire a projectile made of a small amount of its mass. Does light damage, but passes on any on-contact effects and can slow, blind, or silence target depending on location hit.), Dissolve (A classic among slimes. Can slowly dissolve and destroy objects that are in contact with its body. Yes, you can do that trope.)

Mole: Earth Eater (Reference. Can slowly heal by burying itself in the ground and eating various minerals.), Earth Armor (Fur takes on a more solid texture, mimicking the rocks around it. Increases physical defense, but slightly slows monster), Dust Devil (Monster uses it's minor control over it's element to create a weak tornado. Dust and sand in the tornado is spinning fast enough to cause scratches and minor injuries. Can also temporarily blind opponent.)

Ember: Fire Mind (Has impressive control over its element and can move nearby fire sources as easily as its own body.), Flash Fire (Monster flashes with a blinding light, temporarily disorienting nearby creatures, and lights non-allies on fire within a 10 meter radius.), Ensconce (Monster can become one with nearby fire, allowing it to hide and slowly heal.)

Rare Rank Examples
Slime: Mimicry (Can take on the general shape of the creature in front of it. It is still made of its base material, however. Gains a moderate boost to its stats based on the strength of its target.), Incorporate (Can absorb objects and incorporate parts of them into its form, gaining a minor boost to its stats based on what the object was.), Mitosis (Can absorb organic material to gain mass. Once a day can create a lesser copy of itself without this skill by using half its total mass.)

Mole: Earth Control (A more powerful version of the common skill, this skill gives the monster control over all the Earth withing a 3 meter range around it which it can manipulate freely.), Drillburr (Digs much faster than normal by spinning with it's claws outstretched. Can be used as an attack with high armor-piercing abilities.), Pebble Shot (Pretty basic name, considering the rank. Fires a pebble at high speeds with high accuracy. Shape of pebble can be changed to either add extra knockback or penetrations.)

Ember: Burst (Can create a small explosion within a 20 meter area centered on itself. Must be able to see where it's creating the blast.), Firefly (Increases the heat its main body gives off and significantly increases its flight speed.), Backdraft (When in an enclosed space, monster can absorb all the oxygen in the space, creating a vacuum. Using this excess oxygen the monster can create a massive explosion, killing itself in the process.)

Epic Rank Examples
Slime: Hammerspace (Can hold large objects inside itself without it showing or affecting it on the outside. Can hold living creatures, but hostile creatures can attempt to break free), Possess (Can force its way into the body of its target and take control of their movements. Victim is aware the entire times.), Melt (Can camouflage itself as a puddle, becoming immune to physical damage, but unable to move. Great for ambushes.)

Mole: Separation (Having gotten so good at cutting through the Earth with its claws, the monster is able to channel a small amount of spatial magic around their claws, significantly increasing their penetration power.), Earth Dweller (While in contact with Earth, monster gains large buffs to its stats. Effect quickly fades when no longer in contact with Earth, fading fully after 5 seconds of no contact.), Subterranean (Monster's ability to manipulate Earth is significantly improved while it is fully submerged in it. Would pair well with Tremor Vision and Earth Control.)

Ember: Sunburst (A more powerful version of Burst. Has significantly increased range and damage.), Mirage (Can use the heat haze in the air to create mirages. Can use the mirages to make it look like there are more than one, make itself invisible, both, and more.), Sunburn (Just being near this monster slowly cooks its enemies. Non-allies within a 20 meter radius of this monster constantly take moderate damage if they are not resistant or immune to fire damage.)

Legendary Rank Examples
Slime: Adaptation (Taking enough damage from a single source will cause the monster to become immune to that damage for 24 hours. Damage required is 10% of the monster's total health. All of that 10% must be from the same type of damage, such as blunt damage, piercing damage, fire damage, etc.), Physical Immunity (Creature becomes almost completely immune to physical sources of damage.), Magical Immunity (Creature becomes almost completely immune to magical sources of damage.)

Mole: Terra Mastery (Can manipulate all Earth within a 1000 meter diameter from itself, even through walls, and is immune to Earth damage entirely.), Quarry Master (Is capable of creating massive pits within seconds and with little to no warning. Pits can be thousands of meters deep.), Like Water (Can move through Earth so easily it might as well not even be there. Doesn't even leave a hole for others to follow. While moving through the Earth its Agility is increased to the point that it might as well be teleporting from place to place.)

Ember: Kin of the Sun (Heat given off of the monster is so intense that any non-ally within a 20 meter radius that isn't resistant or immune to Fire bursts into flames. Any non-allies outside of that range up to a distance of 500 meters, not through walls, takes constant fire damage. Non-enchanted metals and stone melt within the 20 meter radius as well.), To Ashes (Can target one hostile within line of sight. Target immediately bursts into flames that won't go out until monster is defeated. Only three targets can be affected at any given time.), Supernova (Upgraded version of Backdraft. No longer requires itself to be in an enclosed space. Can begin absorbing oxygen from its surroundings and using it to fuel its fire. While active all Fire based skills gain a 50% boost in efficiency. Should the monster somehow run out of oxygen to absorb it explodes. Explosion's size and damage are based on how long it was absorbing oxygen. Because of the risk to the Dungeon Core, monsters with this skill should be placed in locations where there is a lot of solid walls or objects between the core and monster.)

And there we have it. You're free to use these, or make up your own. As you can see the effects ramped up as the Rank increased. Please keep that in mind. Common skills should be pretty basic and weak, while you can go crazy with Legendary skills. A lot of these skills can also be applied to other monsters, so if you like them, but want to use a different monster, go ahead. Thanks for reading.

THE END.
