Chapter #4

The Chemistry Classic

Derek slowly but surely began to peel himself off the bottom of the girl's shoe as class progressed. Before he knew it, the little guy had detached his upper body and needed only a little while longer before he would have gotten off of the shoe's rubber sole. As he was getting his left leg free, a sudden shaking startled him. The girl started to move in her seat and her foot shifted. "Oh shit!" Derek cried. The shoe he was still attached to drifted downwards, threatening to dismiss all of Derek's progress and smush him back against the sole. Instead, the girl just shifted her legs a little bit and soon brought her foot back over her leg and rested it in the air. Breathing a sigh of relief, Derek stopped for a moment before continuing with his progress.

Just as the tiny assistant was about to escape, his right leg being the last thing he needed to loosen up, a gasp came from his right side. The sideways assistant turned his head. There, looking right at him in utter shock, was the girl. Her blonde hair fell to her side as her head lay that direction, looking underneath the table. She had light brown eyes and clean skin, each of which glimmered as Derek looked back at the girl. "No way," she whispered, "you're a little man!" Derek didn't say a word before she reached for him and roughly pulled him off of her shoe. Pulling him out from under the table, the girl dropped the little guy in front of her, on her notebook. "You really are a person!" she exclaimed. The lecture in the class continued on without the girl giving it any attention. Her full focus was on Derek. He smiled awkwardly at her. "Hey, thanks for getting me off your shoe. You accidentally stepped on me in the hallway when you were on your way here. Oops," he spoke dryly. The girl giggled, finding his story funny. "You are just adorable. My name's Amanda, what's yours?" Derek introduced himself as Mr. Bates. "Nice to meet you, Mr. Bates. Care to help me with my chem project? We're about to get started." Though Derek wasn't perfectly proficient in chemistry, it was his job to help out students. Besides, Amanda had rescued him from her shoe, though he had almost done it himself.

"Sure," Derek replied. The two got to work, beginning with a few beakers and glancing at some formulas written down on a packet of instructions. As the two were speeding along the project at great pace, nailing every step, Amanda's lab partner arrived, well late to the class. "I'm so sorry," the girl said as she dropped her things near the empty seat beside Amanda. "I just got to school. It's just been a mess of a day." When the girl sat down, she noticed Derek. "Um, who's this?" she asked. Both Derek and Amanda turned around. Derek found a light brown skinned girl, about Amanda's height, looking at him in confusion. She had curly black hair and brown eyes. Before he could introduce himself, Amanda did it for him. "Oh, this is Mr. Bates. He's an assistant here at the school. I accidentally stepped on him in the hall and brought him with me here to class," the blonde girl laughed. "He's a real good guy, though. Been helping me with our project. Come on, let's get back to it." As Derek and Amanda turned around, the black girl approached the stuff. "My name's Clara, by the way," she introduced. As she leaned against the table with the chemicals, Clara accidentally knocked one over. The product held within the container spilled right onto the small helper.

"GAH!" Derek cried. He fell backwards and onto his backside. "I am so sorry!" Clara apologized. Amanda, very concerned, was about to go get the teacher. That's when Derek stood back up. "Never mind, I think I overreacted," he said. Derek stretched, feeling a touch sore for some reason. "Nothing too bad, it seems like. Maybe my small exterior is safe from those chemicals or something." But Derek could not have been more wrong. The chemicals did indeed do something to his body, though he didn't know what quite yet.

What had happened to Derek?
