Chapter #5

Moving in the right direction

Derek struggled around as he made vain attempts at escaping from the teacher's chest. "Could she not have just put me on her desk or something? I get that she has good intentions, but for heaven's sake," he thought. Derek finally relaxed after some ten minutes of fruitless effort. He sat perfectly still inside of Mrs. Grover's cleavage, the warmth of the environment soothing him. The softness of the teacher's chest was another calming factor, almost luring Derek into a state of sleepiness. Thankfully, the woman's constant moving as the class neared its conclusion shook her chest a little and kept Derek awake. The little assistant could hear the bell for the class ring, though it was greatly muffled by the cushy walls of his enclosure. Finally, Derek found himself getting pulled out of Mrs. Grover's chest, a relief that he had been waiting for for quite some time.

"Are you feeling any better, Derek?" the tan woman asked. Derek sighed and he met her glasses-covered gaze. "Yes, I'm fine, thank you. To clarify, I do think that putting me in your chest was unnecessary. I could have fared just fine on the desk," Derek responded. Mrs. Grover gave him a smile. "Oh well, I'm glad to hear you're feeling better. Anyways, let me get Marley." The teacher turned around with Derek in hand to find the class dismissing out of the room. Scanning the students to find the troublemaker, neither Mrs. Grover nor Derek could find her. "Oh, she must have slid out at the beginning of the bell," the head teacher concluded. Both her and Derek were irritated, but there was nothing they could do. Instead of pursuing her, Mrs. Grover chose to call the office and let them know of Marley's disobedience. "I'll get right on that," the woman spoke to Derek, "while you head to your next class. I'm sorry about the trouble." Derek smiled at the kind woman then reassured her it was no problem. With nothing left to say, he waved her goodbye and left for his next class.

A few minutes later, Derek found himself standing on a new teacher's desk, with his things already organized. Mrs. Johnson, a teacher whom Derek had already been acquainted, was the little assistant's next staff member to help. "Good morning, Derek," the blonde woman smiled, "It's good to see you." Derek responded in kind as students started filing into the room. While they did so, Mrs. Johnson started going over the day's agenda with her assistant. After doing so, she made sure to point out a kid who seemed like they were going to need attention. "That girl over there," Mrs. Johnson subtly pointed to, "is Megan." The girl in question was a shorter girl, with light skin, freckles, and orange hair. Additionally, she wore glasses and sported blue eyes. "Truth is, she's pretty smart. Ahead of the others, as a matter of fact. Unfortunately, Megan's a little shy and doesn't engage in class much. She turns in homework on time and does excellent in that regard, but I think she could do a little more in class. Would you mind spending some time with her and helping her?" Derek nodded. "Sure, no problem," he replied. As class started, Derek went to the girl's aid.

"Hi there," the assistant spoke. No response from Megan, who was looking intently down at her notebook. "Excuse me?" Derek spoke up again. Finally, he registered to the girl. She initially looked up from her notebook and surveyed around her, to find no one. When she heard Derek once more, Megan looked down to the ground. "Oh, hi..." Megan meekly whispered. She gently picked Derek up and set him on her desk. "I heard about you. You're the tiny little helper. I don't need help, though. But thank you," Megan politely informed. Derek shook his head. "I understand that you are quite the smart kid. But I think you should start interacting with the class a little bit more, sharing your thoughts. It couldn't hurt for someone like you to share your answers, right? Who knows, maybe you could help others." Megan shyly smiled. "Yeah? Okay, but I... I don't know, I have a hard time with that." Derek knew that he had something going and kept at it for the remainder of the class. When that class ended, Megan hugged Derek gently before thanking him and putting him back on the ground. She left promptly as the bell rang and Derek went back to Mrs. Johnson to report his progress.

How does the rest of the day go for Derek?
