That's the sound Josh wakes up to every morning to alert him that it's time to start the day. Technically, he could sleep for another half hour or so if he wanted, but if he did he wouldn't be able to eat until lunchtime, as the cafeteria stopped serving breakfast at 9.
Groggily switching off his alarm and getting dressed, he made his way to the Academy dining hall. Along the way, he thought about how his first week at his new school had gone so far. He'd already made some friends, so that was a plus. There was Nancy, a centaur on the track team. She seemed to just be naturally friendly, warming up to him in the first few days of the semester.
Then there was Kayla, a nine foot tall, somewhat muscular werewolf that had an obvious crush on Josh. She often flirted with him, though Josh didn't exactly return her feelings, finding it kind of annoying. To be honest, he was kind of intimidated by her, probably due to her size.
He had also managed to make some enemies in his brief time on campus. Not by anything he had done, said enemies were just plain mean to humans, and to Josh in particular. He was referring to Malcolm and Morgan, a vampire and succubus couple respectively. The two of them took every chance they got to insult and harass him.
He did his best to ignore them, but it was getting to the point that he didn't know how much longer he could keep it up. He would report them to Ms. Redstone, the dragon headmistress of the school, but they hadn't really done anything serious enough to warrant a severe punishment. Yet.
Ms. Redstone was known for being very strict when it came to school rules. Put one toe out of line in front of her, and she'd send you down her throat to her stomach for the day. Sometimes longer for repeat offenders. Being a dragon, she was so huge, her office was actually located beneath the school.
Josh sat at a table with his tray of scrambled eggs and toast. As he ate, he heard the sound of clopping hooves against the time floor approaching. He turned to see Nancy coming to get him. "Heya, Josh! What's on the agenda for today?"
