Chapter #4

become a fish, the room a tank

    by: DougTF Author IconMail Icon
She loves the water, loves to swim, and well, she is in the animal wing, so she envisions herself a brilliantly colored Betta fish, and when she opens her eyes, everything has changed.

She gasps, except it certainly doesn't make a sound, and takes a deep breath, but that means her neck flexes instead of her mouth or nose, and she feels the cool, oxygen rich water rushing through the scales on the sides of her body, over her gills. Her vision is blurry, but then clears.... no, adjusts, really and she sees brightly colored rocks under her, clear water all around, a few plastic plants, a treasure chest with bubbles and ...smack.

She wobbles and instinctively swims backwards a bit, then forward once more, until...smack. Her human mind processes it, even as her fish instincts have her bounce once more into the glass wall of her tank. It's an interesting sensation because her mind seems to be both that of the fish she has turned into, as well as the human she had been. Gloria considers this as her new body swims around a bit, almost as if on autopilot, and figures it makes sense: having the instinctive behaviors of a new form is probably vital to be able to function in that form. Once she surmises that, she finds it feels really nice, relaxing being a fish, swimming around, and while her fish mind is not at all bored by the limits of her tank, Gloria realizes this existence is pretty shallow... chuckling inwardly at the pun she inadvertently made there, but it is boring to her human psyche. If only she had a different environment or maybe even other fish with which to interact.

She feels a change in air pressure, and her human mind pieces together that someone entered the room, and it must be a concierge. But then some flakes of fish food hit the water, and she ravenously swims to the top of her tank, mouth reflexively snapping the thin morsels of food. She can just barely see huge fingers and wonders how she could communicate with the staff, but her query is answered right away.

"Hello, Miss Cardon and I must say you make a lovely fish, your fins are simply stunning. But you were lamenting the fact you were alone, and thought about a different environment? Oh, and I can hear your thoughts, if you direct them at me, that is" Gloria twirls about, considering and bobs a bit in her tank. "Yes, this form is amazing, but it is rather dull being alone in such a small tank... is there anywhere larger I could explore?"

The concierge nods "I can transfer you to a tank in the lobby with some other fish, though of course if you leave the animal wing, you will be stuck as this form until you want to come back. The only other realistic option is leaving the resort and being donated to an aquarium. We don't release our guests into the wild, as your lifespan in the wild is far shorter, plus so many threats that can affect you since you are in fact alive"

Remembering the pool float she saw being carried out "That guy who was a pool float, that has to be so dangerous then!" But the concierge simply laughs "Oh no, that is the safest option for leaving the resort, well other than leaving at a younger age than when you entered I suppose. It can't die because it's not alive" Gloria pauses her swimming, floored "Wait, if you turn into an object, you are immortal...well, no, since you are not alive, but you can't die? Oh, yeah, I see what you mean" her mind racing and the concierge smiles once more "I see that intrigues you, and if you like swimming, you would make a lovely swimsuit...we often have other guests who need new clothes in the gender wing, and were you to transform and be taken there, no one would know you were anything more than a mere article of clothing. But the lobby fish tank is also an option, since I can see you are enjoying the water so much Gloria"

Gloria decides:
