They threw pokeballs, summoning Piplup and Turtwig. The two were still a little shaken from the sudden attack, so the pokémon focused on the Starly.
After what felt like forever, the Starly flew away.
Barry took a calming breath. "Your Piplup was pretty cool, but my Turtwig was tougher!"
Lucas shook his head. "They aren't ours, Barry."
"Yea, they belong to the professor."
They returned the pokémon to their pokeballs and went to return them to the briefcase, but froze when they heard running.
Dawn came running up and grabbed the briefcase before running off again. She came and went so fast, they didn't have time to tell her.
Barry was the first to break the silence. "Well, what do we do now?"
"They live in the next town over and it's getting late. We should take care of them and return them tomorrow morning."
With that, they went back to their homes. Lucas told his mother, they took care of Piplup's wounds and ensured he was fed. He insisted on Piplup sleeping in his room, so Johanna didn't bother arguing.
The next day, Lucas gave Piplup another once over to ensure the wounds were healing. He then gave him a bath and food.
As he was preparing to go to Sandgem Town, there was a knock at the door.
"Lucas, it's for you!" His mother called up.
He put the pokeball in his backpack and went down to find Dawn in the doorway. "Hello, Lucas. Professor Rowan would like to see you."
He didn't argue and followed her to the professor's lab.
When they got there, he was surprised to see Barry. She then asked for Piplup back and went further into the lab.
Barry was panicking about what was going to happen to them. Lucas tried to reassure him, but he was a little scared himself.
After only a minute, Dawn came back and invited them in.
Rowan explained to them how he was surprised at how happy and cared for the pokémon were, so he offered the two to keep them. When they excepted, he gave them pokedexs.
The two immediately went back to Twinleaf Town and began packing for their journey. Just before leaving one last time, Barry challenged Lucas to their first battle.
