Chapter #4

Ruben and Maria

    by: TheSwapper
The possibilities were endless, and the night had only just begun. As I stood there, the weight of my new power pressing down on me, my eyes instinctively settled on Ruben and Maria, standing near the kitchen, laughing and chatting like nothing could ever change. With his stocky build, Ruben leaned casually against the counter, a drink in hand, while Maria animatedly told a story with her fit figure and long, dark hair. Her hands moved expressively, captivating Ruben’s attention as she spoke.

A thought crept into my mind, almost too tempting to resist—what if I swapped them? What if Ruben suddenly found himself in Maria's place, with all her confidence, energy, and warmth, while Maria took on Ruben's laid-back, grounded demeanor? The idea was intoxicating, and before I could second-guess myself, I focused on the two of them, willing the change to happen.

The room dimmed slightly, the lights flickering as if reacting to the energy in the air. An electric sensation prickled along my skin, a sign that reality itself was about to shift in response to my will. I could feel the atmosphere in the room pulse with an unspoken tension as I zeroed in on Ruben and Maria, watching with a mixture of awe and disbelief as their bodies began to respond to my unspoken command.

Their conversation halted abruptly. They stood perfectly still, their expressions frozen in place. The transformation started subtly, with their necks beginning to soften, as if the once-solid flesh and bone were turning into something malleable, like jelly. It was a surreal sight, watching their necks lose definition, becoming pliable enough that their heads could be removed effortlessly.

Ruben and Maria reached up without a word, their hands gently cradling their heads. Their movements were calm, deliberate, and almost ritualistic, as though they were following some unspoken instructions guided by an unseen force. My breath caught in my throat as I watched them lift their heads from their shoulders, the gelatinous substance giving way easily, leaving their bodies headless, yet somehow still animated as if they were waiting for the next step.

For a moment, they stood there, headless bodies that should have been horrifying but somehow felt oddly natural in the context of this strange new reality. Then, with eerie synchronicity, Ruben and Maria traded their heads, carefully placing them onto each other's bodies. Ruben's robust and masculine head settled onto Maria’s slender shoulders, while Maria's head, with her delicate features and long hair, found its place atop Ruben’s broad frame.

As their heads connected with their new bodies, I felt that electric sensation intensify. It was as if the world was adjusting to this new state of being, recalibrating reality to accommodate my changes. I watched, heart pounding in my chest, as their necks began to solidify once more. The jelly-like substance formed, seamlessly merging their heads with their new bodies. The transformation was complete.

Maria on Ruben’s body blinked a few times, a small, playful smile curving on her lips. She adjusted her stance slightly, getting used to the different balance, but there was no sign of confusion, no indication that anything was amiss. She was Ruben now, through and through. Once fluid and lively, her movements had become more grounded and deliberate, mirroring how Ruben had always carried himself.

Meanwhile, Ruben on Maria’s body—his head now perched on Maria’s slim frame—squared his shoulders and let out a low chuckle, a sound that sent a shiver down my spine. "You okay, Nic? You look like you've seen a ghost," Ruben said. His voice was more profound and resonant yet laced with the warmth and liveliness that had always been a part of Maria’s character.

I forced myself to smile, though my mind was still spinning from what I had just witnessed. "Yeah, I'm good," I replied, my voice barely steady. "Just… taking it all in."

Maria was now fully embracing the role of Lexy’s stepfather and glanced around the room, her expression calm and authoritative. There was an air of familiarity in how she interacted with everyone as if she had always been the head of the Mendoza household. She moved towards Kristella, and they began discussing something in low tones. To anyone watching, it would seem like a regular interaction between a husband and wife.

Meanwhile, Ruben had seamlessly integrated himself into the role of a coworker, slipping into the conversation with Lexy and me as though he had always been part of our work life. His interactions were now more lively and animated, his hands moving expressively as he spoke, perfectly fitting Maria's former personality but with Ruben's depth and seriousness still underlying his words.

The rest of the room was utterly oblivious to the monumental shift that had just taken place. To them, everything was normal—Maria was the stepfather, Ruben was the coworker, and the world continued as if nothing had changed. Only I knew the truth.

I watched them closely, marveling at the ease they had adapted to their new forms. It was as if their entire beings had been reshaped to fit their new bodies and identities, and the world around them had adjusted to this new reality. The switch had utterly redefined their roles in our lives, yet this new reality was how things had always been to everyone else.

I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe—and perhaps a bit of fear—at the power I now held. The night had become a new, almost surreal quality, and I knew this was just the beginning. The possibilities were endless, and the temptation to push the boundaries of this power was growing stronger by the minute.

I glanced around the room, seeing my friends and their new realities, realizing my newfound ability settled in more profoundly. The question that lingered in my mind was straightforward—what would I do next? And how far was I willing to go?
