Chapter #5

The Great Unlucky Swap

    by: Dannyreads Author IconMail Icon
It was like any ordinary day for the unlucky adventurer, Bennett. Upon discovering an entirely brand new domain ready to be explored, he had thought that luck was on his side. Unfortunately when he entered the adventurer’s guild and announced that he needed an exploration team, no one volunteered. It wasn’t until Fischl had arrived before he was about to leave that she decided to accompany him on this unknown adventure.

Standing in front of the doors of the domain, Bennett eagerly stood proud, ready to step in and find what treasures awaited. Fischl on the other hand was cautious.

“So, any information about this mysterious domain?”

“Nope, nothing! But that’s not going to stop us from exploring every inch in this place! Benny’s adventure team, move out!”

As he happily opened the doors and briskly went in, Fischl followed behind him, still unsure about the area. Her familiar, Oz appeared before her and also questioned the state of the domain.

“Um, are you sure about this Milady? There’s something about this place that seems ominous.”

“Oh Oz, afraid of a little area? It’ll be fine, it doesn’t seem as if this domain is huge. Besides, it’s better to accompany Bennett than to let him wonder on his own. Do you remember what happened last time he set out on a quest on his own?”

Oz trembled upon recalling what happened, “I prefer not to recollect that instant… I can still hear the squeals of the wild boars invading the guild…”

What seemed to be a promising domain ended up being lackluster. They searched throughout the area but to no avail found no treasure. In reality, the domain wasn’t even huge. Bennett started to panic a bit.

“W-What the heck? Where’s all the treasure at?? There’s no sign of any inhabitants, what’s going on?”

“Perhaps this domain was unpromising to begin with, based on the outside there really was no sign of people living around the area. Just how did you come across this domain?” Fischl asked.

“Well I was on my way to the guild where I tripped and started tumbling down the hill where I crashed into these bushes that turned out to be hiding the domain’s doors. Guess my bad luck came back to bite me, huh?”

Oz chimed in, “Don’t feel down about this, perhaps this domain was simply abandoned before anyone could mark this place in it.”

“Yeah, I guess so…”

Right when he was about to walk back, he stepped onto a fake stone that activated and made the stone pillars move away exposing a dark room. Bennett’s eyes lit up as he cheered that he had found something in this empty domain. He marched into the room as Fischl and Oz were behind him. He lit up a torch revealing that the room was empty but had strange markings written in a circle on the floor followed by what appeared to be a small totem in the center with strange incantation writing. The room also had a vague opening in the ceiling that showed little skylight.

“What in the world? What is all this?” Bennett said, confused.

“Strange, perhaps this domain was inhabited after all. Judging from these markings, a high class mage must have inscribed these.” Said Fischl as she invested it.

“Indeed.” Oz added, “But I'm afraid I'm not familiar with this writing… This could possibly be a dangerous spell. I would stay cautious if I were you two.”

They both nodded as they continued looking around. Bennett decided to check the totem, casually walking into the circle.

“Easy there!” Oz warned. “We don’t know how the spell activates, we need to carefully examine this.”

“S-Sorry, I wanted to inspect it, that's all...”

Bennett turned back around to examine the totem. He had no experience in magic and didn’t know what to make of this at all. While the three continued examining, they suddenly heard aggressive growls echoing outside of the room.

“I don’t like the sound of that…” Bennett said uneasily.

It was then that a swarm of hilichurls came in, rushing at them.

“Hilichurls?! How did they come in?!”

“However they came in, we can worry about later!” Said Fischl as she preps her bow. “We need to get rid of them now! Oz!”

“On it Milady!”

Oz charged in unleashing shocks of electricity to the hilichurls as Fischl lands every shot into each one of them. Bennett watched as he brought out his sword.

“Dang it!” He said to himself, “First I found this domain thinking I was gonna strike gold just to find nothing and now this?? Give me a break, my bad luck sure is testing me but I won't let it defeat me!”

Bennett then wounded up his sword charging his skill move.

“Everyone stand back!”

Ready to charge through the hoard, he launched himself forward passing Fischl and Oz. From the sight of Bennett blasting through them, Fischl panicked, calling out to him.

“WAIT YOU SHOULDN’T CHARGE IN YOU MIGHT-”

When Bennett unleashed his attack on the hoard, the recoil sent him back flying just as Fischl was about to say.

“-Get back launched back…”

In a small room like they were in, there wasn’t much to where Bennett could land. Tragically, his bad luck came and bit him yet again because he ended up landing on the totem, breaking it. The impact was solid as Bennett placed a hand on his back.

“Ahh my back… That’s going to leave a mark. What did I hit-” He paused, realizing what he just landed on. “Oh no…”

Upon seeing the broken totem, even Fischl and Oz were shocked.

“D-Did Bennett just…”

“Oh dear…”

They looked back at the nervous boy for a second as the hoard kept rushing in. Suddenly, the markings on the floor began to emit a bright light blinding everyone in it. The whole room was engulfed in the light as it seemed that the battle was placed on hold. Fischl called out to him.

“Bennett, are you okay??”

“I… I think so? I can’t see anything!”

“Stick together!” Oz said. “We must not get separated!”

As everyone was blinded by the light, even the hilichurls were affected as they made panicked growls. Yet unbeknownst to them, the lighted up circle had suddenly blasted upwards straight into the sky from the small opening. The sky then became a bright yellow light that reached all over the regions of Teyvat. The light sent waves of fear and confusion to everyone, not knowing what was happening or where it came from.

Back in the room where the trio and hilichurls were still blinded, all Bennett could do was try to get up but he was blaming himself for all this.

“Ahhh why did this have to happen?!!” He said to himself, gritting his teeth. “Every time I think something good is about to happen my bad luck always gets me! Why am I cursed with so much bad luck??!”

As Bennett wanted to yell out his frustration, he couldn’t. It seemed the light must’ve had some sort of magic within it concealing everyone’s voices. In fact the magic had a tremendous force to it making everyone feel a weird sense of dislocation as everyone’s consciousness was leaving their bodies behind. A great force jerked everyone’s soul out as everything went dark, but not before Bennett muttered to himself.

“I wish I could be someone that doesn’t have back luck…”

What felt like an instant, Bennett began to regain consciousness. Slowly opening his eyes, he found himself in an unfamiliar setting.
