Chapter #4

A world without Georgia

“Ungh, what’s going on? Where am I? You asked groggily as you moved to an upright position.

“Still with me it seems,” Kyle responded from his side of the bed.

“Weren’t we just in the kitchen?”

“Yeah, but then we both started to feel faint and…” Kyle quickly ran his hands over his body and continued, “it seems we’re still in your in-laws’ bodies, but why is it morning again?” He asked as he got up. “Ooh, that hurts, why does it hurt to get up?”

“Yeah, it wasn’t as easy as before for me either. Does that mean…” you trailed off as you once again made your way over to the ensuite bathroom. “Shit. We’re old now.”

“For real?”

“Yeah, come take a look”

Kyle slowly made his way to stand beside you and his jaw dropped as he saw your respective reflections in the mirror.

“How old do you think we are? Do Georgia’s parents look this bad already?”

“No, I think we’re further in the future for some reason. We’re at least twenty years older than they were when we got sent back”

“So you’re saying we’re in the future?”

“I guess, maybe. Hard to say for sure without checking. Maybe we have phones?”

The two of you hurriedly went back to your bed to check the bedside tables for any signs of a phone or other technology you could use to check the date.

“Nothing, are these people anti-phone?” Kyle asked.

“Not that I remember, but I guess they could be. I think we should try and look around again and see what we find”

“Yeah, alright. Round two of this shit, here we go”

You made your way around the bedrooms and saw that they all looked unused except for office like furniture that you found in each room. You remembered that the Irving’s had kept Georgia’s room just like she left it, so you were surprised to see that it was setup differently. Another thing you noticed was that each space seemed very individual. Like there wasn’t a lot of sharing or anything. There seemed to be a version of his and hers for every element of the house.

“Come look at this,” Kyle called up to you.

As you made your way down to the kitchen you couldn’t help but feel like the house was devoid of the joy and warmth that it had always had in the past. That was saying a lot for you as you normally didn’t register much of a feeling from a space, but you definitely were feeling something now.

“It’s a utility bill, we’re not in the future. We’re just ugly and old I guess?” Kyle commented.

“This is still 5 years before I met Georgia. We ended up like this after 25 years?”

“Why would that be?”

“I don’t know, but I suspect it has something to do with the fact that I don’t see any evidence of Georgia having lived here. Which is weird because her parents had kept her room pristine for her if she ever wanted to visit.”

“What was in the room instead?”

“Office equipment basically. A desk, an old phone. Pretty rudimentary stuff. No bed at all”

“That is weird.”

“I just have this feeling like the house is devoid of love. I can’t put my finger on it”

“Yeah, I’m feeling it too”

“Is it possible that we caused this?”

“What?! How?”

“I don’t know, it’s just you were giving me a hard time about having a kid, so I was thinking about how I wasn’t about to do that with you. Then the headache came on and we were here.”

“You think that we changed the past by me teasing you about getting pregnant?”

“I mean, it looks like we didn’t end up going through with it. So yeah”

“That seems nuts. It’s five years before you met Georgia but surely she told you where she was living back then. Let’s go see if we can find her”

“Oh, good idea. Yeah, she was living by the shore. An apartment building that I thought looked cute when she would point it out when we drove by it. I’m sure I can point it out.”

“Great. Let’s head out straight away then”

After some debate over who would drive, Kyle eventually got behind the wheel. The two of you were on your way out of the house for the first time in your new bodies and you both looked like an absolute mess. You did your best given the circumstances, but you were wildly unprepared for creating a presentable image of your mother in law. You were also glad to discover you hadn’t needed to put on any underwear as you had already been wearing some. It wasn’t fashionable at all, but you preferred to avoid that eventuality for another day.

After a drive that left both you and Kyle feeling a buildup of physical discomfort, you arrived at your destination.

“Can’t believe I get sore from being in the car for that short a period of time,” Kyle commented.

“Yeah, I guess we really take our health for granted. What kind of lives must we have led to end up like this?”

“I don’t like that line of thinking Grant. We didn’t do anything out of the ordinary.”

“You shouldn’t call me Grant in public. People will stare, you said. Remember, I’m Charlotte and you’re Richard from now on”

“Yeah, fine fine. I’ll remember”

You both made your way up to the front lobby directory. Scanning through the names you looked for any reference to Georgia or to an Irving last name. To your dismay, you found nothing.

“Hey, you there,” Kyle said to a passerby.

“Uh, yeah?”

“You lived here long?”

“I guess, a while yeah”

“You know a woman named Georgia? She’s gorgeous, you wouldn’t be able to miss her. We’re looking for her and she’s supposed to live here”

“Can’t say I know anyone with that name. Certainly no one here that matches that description though”

You grabbed Kyle and pulled him aside as the stranger resumed his original course. “See, I told you. We changed the future by being prudes about us having sex. I bet we’re like this because we never touched each other for 25 years of marriage.”

“That’s crazy, but I think you might be on to something. So what l, we need to start humping to fix the timeline?”

“I think we would have needed to do that a long time ago,” as you said this that headache feeling returned for you. You felt as though you were about to faint and then…
