Magical Mom - Book

    by: Morphology Author IconMail Icon
Opening the trunk, Kim could feel her heart beat starting to race with anticipation. As she started to open the trunk she was getting the aroma of old books. Growing up in a working class family and near the public library, Kim frequented the library during the summer and the smell of books brought her back to the simpler times. With the lid of the trunk fully open, she looked inside to find a well worn leather book that had certainly seen better days. Pulling out the book from the trunk, Kim found that it had a piece of ribbon being used as a bookmark. Opening it up, she was instantly engulfed in a pale blue light, surprised she closed the book, causing the light to go out. "What in the world?" She exclaimed out loud as she looked around to find if there was a light that had gone out or if something was going on the fritz. Not seeing anything that seemed to be causing the light, she opened the book once more.

As she opened it to the page that she had previously, the blue light could be seen once again, but from the book itself. Looking at the page, she found the pale light was coming from the blank page. While looking at the page, some text started to appear before her eyes. "HELLO?"

If she didn't see it appear in front of her own eyes, Kim would have just thought that it was already written on the page. With a shaky voice, Kim answered back. "Umm... Hello?" She was certainly thankful that nobody was watching her right how or she was sure that they would be calling the hospital. "This is stupid." She started, but stopped as the words continued to flow on the page.

"FINALLY SOMEBODY WITH WHOM I CAN CONNECT WITH. WHAT IS YOUR NAME, STRANGER? "

Feeling her heart beating through her chest, Kim answered back. "Umm... Kimberly Anne Mitchell. May I be able to ask who you are?" She thought it might be bit of a stretch, but was surprised to see it continuing.

"WELL MET, KIMBERLY MITCHELL. I AM FARGO LAYMAN AND IF YOU'RE ABLE TO READ THIS, IT MEANS THAT YOU HAVE THE APPROPRIATE APTITUDE FOR MAGIC."

"Magic, really?" Kim exclaimed, not entirely sure to believe what she was reading. "Are you sure and how did you get put into this book?"

"AYE, MAGIC. YOUR MAGIC RESERVES ARE LOW, BUT WITH PRACTICE AND USE THEY WILL GROW. AS FOR HOW I WAS UNFORTUNATE TO BECOME ONE WITH THIS TOME. IT WAS BECAUSE OF MY HALF BROTHER, MER--- I MEAN BAILOR RUMMINESS. HE DEFEATED ME IN A DUAL AND I WAS FORCED TO BECOME ONE WITH MY TOME, NEVER TO WALK THE EARTH AGAIN. ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BEING SCHOOLED IN THE WAYS OF MAGIC?"

Silently reading what was being displayed on the page, it took almost everything within her to not drop the book in surprise. Ever since she was a little girl, she wished that she could do magic. Even reading the Perry Hatter series religiously in order to seem to be close to magic. Bringing her attention back down at the book, Kim found her voice once more. "Ermm... Yes, I would love to learn, when can we start?"

"EXCELLENT. I HAVE ALLOWED YOU TO USE THIS BOOK AS ONE OF THE REGISTERED USERS. IF THERE IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WISH TO FIND, SIMPLY SPEAK AND I WILL DIRECT YOU TO THE APPROPRIATE PAGE. BE WELL KIMBERLY MITCHELL AND WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF MAGIC."

She really didn't know what to expect, a wealth of knowledge beamed directly into her head, an text to appear in front of her to show that she'd level up her magic, or sparks leaving her finger tips. Kim just wanted some indication that she wasn't going insane. "Mom, I'm about to head out, do you need any help with getting that lock open?" Josh called out from the house.

Quickly closing the top of the trunk, Kim sat down on it with the book in her hands. "Uh, no." She quickly answered back, but the curiosity started to get the better of her. "Can you come out here for a minute, I want to show you something."

Soon, Josh had appeared in the doorway leading into the garage. He'd changed into his usual date clothes; an ironed polo with khakis. "What's up?" He asked leaning against the door, but after seeing the drilled out lock and the book in his Mom's hands, he got excited and made his way over to her. "So what was in the trunk? Was it something interesting?" As he grew closer, Kim quickly got up and made her way over to the shelves behind her to make it seem as if she was looking at the various totes of old baby clothes, Christmas decorations, and other assortments of items. Bending down, Josh looked at the drilled lock and seeing how well she did, let out an impressed whistle. "You did a decent job here." Opening up the trunk, Josh could see that it was bare of any items, but the inside looked to be in decent shape. Looking up, he looked at his Mom. "So, what was in it?" He asked again.

Still looking at the various totes, Kim held the tome close to her chest. Slowly, she turned around to face her son, hoping that he would believe what she found. "I found this book." She glanced down at her chest where she was still holding it close to her. Kim looked at her son to gauge whether or not he was believing her, but his face, much like his father's remained unchanged and stoic. She opened the book up to where the fabric bookmark was and placed it on the trunk to show him. Looking at her son, Kim started to talking to the book. "Hello, book can you hear me? I want to introduce you to my son, Joshua." Hearing his Mom talking to the book, Josh started to give her a look of concern. But, just a few seconds after she talked to the book, she let out an excited squeal. Following her gaze to the page.

"HELLO, JOSHUA, IT IS A PLEASURE TO MEET YOU. MY NAME IS FARGO LAYMAN AND I'VE RECENTLY BECOME YOUR MOTHER'S MAGIC TUTOR. I'M ONLY SHOWING MYSELF TO YOU SINCE I NEVER TOLD YOUR MOTHER TO NEVER REVEAL ME TO ANYONE. SINCE SHE DIDN'T KNOW OF THE RULE, I'M LETTING IT SLIDE. KIMBERLY, I WOULD ADVISE YOU TO NOT SHOW THIS TO ANY OTHERS. THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER BEFORE YOU THAT HAVE BEEN, HOW CAN I SAY THIS, LOCKED AWAY AND HAD THE KEY THROWN AWAY FOR TELLING OTHERS ABOUT THIS BOOK."

"Holy Shit." Josh exclaimed as he looked back at his Mom, who had given him a chastising look for the language he'd used. "Sorry."

Letting out an audible giggle, Kim brushed it off. "It's nothing, that I wouldn't have said in our position, honestly." She turned to the book. "Sorry, I didn't know. Josh and I won't reveal your existence to anyone. Right?" She turned her head towards Josh, who quickly affirmed as well. "Do you want to stay and watch as I do my first spell or do you want to wait and see if you can spot the difference when you get back?"

Looking at his watch, he had an hour before he had to pickup Jenn for their date. "I've got some time, what did you have in mind?" As he said this, the smile on her face grew more than the Grinch.

"Well, I was wanting to go through some of my clothes to see if they still fit me and to see how they look on me. If you don't mind." She asked hoping that he would agree so that she can get rid of some of her clothes in the closet.
