Chapter #8

A Sweet Offer from a Sour Source - Pt. 2

The woman who'd nearly crushed you under her tray of food and sat down next to Selena was as enormous as she was gorgeous, being the textbook definition of a Big Beautiful Woman. She carried her weight well, the heft of her immense stomach balanced by the swell of her immense bust and butt. With her beautiful face resembling an older, fuller version of Selena's own, coupled with the same unmistakable silver hair, there was no question this woman was Selena's mother. If Selena resembled a Greek goddess of the oceans, her mother must've been a goddess of fertility.

"Oh, hello," she said noticing Jenna and Ashley. "Selena, aren't you going to introduce me?"

"Ladies, this is my mom, Cynthia Morrow. Mom this is Jenna and Ashley."

"Pleasure to meet you both," Cynthia said, smiling pleasantly.

"Oh. And, uh, that's Mari's boyfriend," Selena said, nodding at you.

"Ohhh," Cynthia said, her smile shortening an almost imperceptible amount. "Right. Mike, is it?"

"It's Mark--IT'S MATT!" you said, annoyed at slipping up on your own name.

"Need a minute to decide, dear?" Cynthia giggled. "They're all fine choices."

Cynthia stuck a finger out for you to shake. You accepted it with some relief. Cynthia didn't seem to despise you like Selena did and the last thing you wanted was another Bea Parker situation.

"Yeesh, mom, did you order everything on the menu?" Selena asked, taking in the mountains of food piled high on the tray.

"Only half of everything," her mom said, playfully nudging Selena with a wide hip. "The other half's for Mari. I'm glad at least one of your friends understands the advantages of robust meals instead of surviving off protein shakes and kale alone."

"Thank you, Cynthia," Mari said appreciatively as she munched on a bit of funnel cake. "This is great! Though obviously the Oasis deep fryers don't hold a candle to anything you whip up in your bakery."

"You run your own bakery?" Ashley asked excitedly. "OMG! Tell me everything, please! I always wanted to run my own cafe someday!"

"You're interested in cooking?"

"Ash is the best cook the Oakland location of Diane's Diner ever had," Jenna said confidently. "She makes their food actually edible."

"I was there on Thursday!" Cynthia gasped. "I told the waitress to pass my compliments to the chef on the chocolate cake! It was one of the best I've ever eaten!"

"That was you?! OMG! I was taking my break, I didn't hear until you already left. I was, like, so totally bummed not to meet you."

"Listen, Ashley dear, I don't mean to poach you from the competition, but one of my bakers quit suddenly on me. I don't suppose you'd be interested in her job?"

"OMG! I'd love to!" Ashley squealed, blushing and bouncing in excitement, nearly bursting out of her string bikini. Then she looked at Jenna and deflated like a balloon. "Oh, but... that, like, means I wouldn't get to work with you, bestie. I can't just--"

"Are you out of your mind? Take the job, Ash!"

"You mean it?"

"Sure! I mean, I'll miss you like crazy, but Diane's Diner is just a gig to me. Cooking is one of your passions. This is a golden opportunity for you! Right guys?"

"Yeah, Ash, go for it!" Mari cheered. "You're the best cook I know!"

"Yeah, your talents are wasted in a place like Diane's," you said.

Unfortunately, Ashley misinterpreted your show of support for a friend, like every nice thing you ever said or did for her, as a flirtation, blushing redder than from Jenna and Mari's compliments combined. She responded by leaning over the table to give you an eyeful of her expansive cleavage you'd only just escaped from.

"Aww, Matty, you're such a sweetie that Cynthia should, like, sell you in her bakery! You're already cute enough to gobble up!"

Mari snorted at her friend's brazenness. You, however, gave a strained and quietly murmured, "Please don't joke about that."

Meanwhile, Selena thought the urge to throw-up in disgust. She couldn't believe your audacity. You'd already been caught fondling your girlfriend's best friend, now you were flirting with her right in front of her?

For god's sake, if you wanna date a normal girl, just go for the redhead who clearly has the hots for y--

Selena's eyes widened in realization. Why hadn't she thought of it sooner? If Mari's bug of a boyfriend and her best friend had feelings for each other, which, they clearly did, then instead of waiting for Mari to realize Mark's obvious flaws on her own, Selena could just give the microscopic horndog a push to hook up with the lovestruck redhead! When Mari caught him cheating on her, she'd finally dump him and her douchebag boyfriend problem would be solved! And if Selena was waiting in the wings with more than just a shoulder to cry on? Well... one thing might lead to another and then lead there several more times that night and following morning! Everybody wins!

"Hey, mom, you still haven't found a replacement assistant, right? Why not give Mari's lil dude a chance? She says he's been out of work."

"Selena!" Mari gasped, then turned to you apologetically. "I swear I didn't say it like you're not looking. I know engineering jobs are tough to find for tinies."

That was true but your ego was still bruised from her confiding that to Selena.

"Me? And cute lil Matty? Working in a bakery?!" Ashley asked, squeeing in excitement.

"C-O-O-K-I-N-G," Jenna taunted in a sing-song voice, make Ash blush even harder.

Cynthia, meanwhile, arched an eyebrow at her daughter. She knew her daughter's feelings towards Mari's boyfriend and Ashley's reaction to the prospect of working with him told her all she needed to know about Selena's hopes to pair the two off. In truth, Cynthia didn't have anything personal against Mari's boyfriend. But that didn't mean she wanted a tiny working in her kitchen. She'd tried to be fair and hired tinies before, those who impressed her with their passion for baking were given jobs despite her better judgement. But all five of them had let her down and simply stopped showing up to work, proving they couldn't hack it in positions meant for normal people.

Unbeknownst to Cynthia, of the five tinies she'd hired, one had been thrown out by Cynthia herself while helping her cleanup the kitchen. Another had been accidentally knocked off the counter by Cynthia then stepped on by a customer who walked out the door, where they remained ingrained into the woman's high-heel to this day. And the other three had been devoured by their oblivious boss due to Cynthia's habit of personally sampling everything she cooked.

Despite her doubt that Mari's boyfriend could be depended on, a single pleading look from her daughter was all it took for Cynthia's resolve to crumble.

"I could certainly use another assistant, I suppose. How about it, dear? Interested?" Cynthia asked you.

"SAY YES!" Ashley squealed, jumping up and down, practically bursting out of her string bikini. "Say yes! Say yes! Say yes!"

"Yeah, come on, bro. Aren't you tired of not being able to take Mari out anywhere nice?" Jenna asked, snippier than usual, annoyed that her best friend's sadness over no longer working with her was replaced with excitement at getting to work with her brother.

"JENNA!" Mari snapped, then, once again, turned to reassure you. "Matt, it's fine. You don't have to do this if you don't want. I like our dates no matter where they are."

Except where their dates were was usually either the couch at one of your places or the Oasis. As mean-spirited as Jenna's words were, she was right that it would be nice to take Mari somewhere nice. It would especially be nice to go out somewhere, just the two of them, to lower the chances of Jenna interfering with your dates. But for that, you needed money.

"Thanks for saying that, Mari. But Jenna's right. You deserve better. Ms. Morrow? Thank you for the job offer, I happily accept!"

*****

The car ride with Ashley had gone as disastrously as expected, Jenna crushing you between her fingers and dropping you in the driver's seat of Ashley's car as she distracted her best friend by giving her a hug for luck. Ashley had sat on you the entire car ride, somehow never realizing that you weren't in the cupholder as she chatted and flirted with empty air thinking it was you the entire time. It wasn't until she got to the bakery that she found you flattened to the driver's seat when she got out of the car.

As you reformed in the palm of her hand, you were struck by the vivid color of your new place of work. The inside of Just the Sweet Stuff was the pinkest place you'd ever been inside, so bright it nearly burned your eyes. You and Ashley arrived before the bakery's opening hours and Cynthia greeted you pleasantly, already dressed in a pale pink uniform with a light purple apron. Her name was embroidered in hot pink on the apron. Cynthia produced a uniform and apron for Ashley and, to your surprise, tiny ones for you as well. It was a thoughtful gesture. At least until you saw the name embroidered on the apron in hot pink: MARK JACKSON.

Maybe this wasn't one of my better ideas, you thought, sighing.

"Alright new employees," Cynthia said, once you and Ashley were both dressed. "Time for your first assignments!"

What will they be?

Choice 1) Cynthia wants to see how well Ashley and you work in the kitchen, she'll be supervising as you two work on baking a batch of frosted brownies from scratch. Hopefully you'll avoid accidentally becoming a secret ingredient, as you have countless times in the past when helping Ashley out in the kitchen.

Choice 2) Cynthia would like you to clean up in the kitchen while she and Ashley handle the actual cooking. You'll start with the floor and have to avoid the bustling feet of the two bakers.

Choice 3) Cynthia would like you to man the register while she shows Ashley the ropes. And as everyone knows, the only customers you ever interact with in the service industry are all completely pleasant and reasonable... right?
