Chapter #3

Arguing in the library

    by: Reneg4de Author IconMail Icon
"I was using that!"

"You were not! Using a book as a headrest is not using it!"

"G-Guys, we can sort this out..."

Helena and Amelia, the girl she was currently embroiled in an argument with over a simple library book, paused their argument to both glare daggers at a boy sat across the table from Amelia. He shrank back under their combined gaze, allowing the two to continue arguing.

"There's other copies, just go use one of them!" Amelia hissed, keeping her voice low as to not raise the ire of the librarian or other library users.

"There isn't, they've all been checked out!" Helena shot back. She too was trying to keep her voice low, but with how childish and aggravating Amelia was being, it was getting harder and harder. "This is the only copy left in the library! I need it for one of my classes, and you don't! I don't get why you're being so stubborn over this!"

"Cause!" Amelia shrugged, glancing around as she thought of a reason. "Ethan needs to use it!"

Helena's head whipped around to stare at Ethan, who hesitated for a moment before slowly shaking his head, prompting Amelia to whip her own head around and make a face at him.

"Ames, just give her the book..." Ethan tried to say, only for both girls to swiftly whisper over him.

"Yeah, Ames, just give me the book!" Helena said, putting extra emphasis on Amelia's nickname.

"No, we might need it in a minute!" Amelia paused, shooting a dirty look sideways at Helena. "Don't ever call me Ames again. You haven't earnt that right".

"Oh, I'm sooooo sorry, Ames!" Helena grinned, seeing that she had finally hit a nerve. Keep this up, and Amelia should practically throw the book at her, desperate to get her away from her. "I'll happily stop if you just give me that book!"

"Oh, I'll give you a book alright..."

"Amelia, stop!"

Amelia, her short fuse already burnt out by Helena, quickly stood, her hands tightly gripping the book that had started the argument. Ethan, having known Amelia long enough to know when she was about to wallop someone, also stood, quickly rushing around the table to try and stop her. And Helena, who had no idea what was about to happen, merely stood there, hand resting on a cocked hip. Only when she saw the book raised above Amelia's head did she catch on.

Oh, Ames, Ames, Ames... Helena tutted mentally, raising a hand to intercept the attack. I so didn't want to have to resort to this, but you've been such a whiny bitch over a simple textbook! I think you need to mellow out!

A ball of light, invisible to all but those attuned to magic, formed in Helena's outstretched palm. As the two girls neared their respective goals, Amelia's being the top of Amelia's head, and Helena's being Amelia's wrist, a pair of hands intercepted them.

"Guys, cut it out!" Ethan said frantically, wrestling the book from Amelia's grasp. "Amelia, why are you being so difficult about this?! We don't need this book! Look!"

He tapped the title in the front cover, drawing Amelia's attention to a line below it that stated 'Advanced Edition 2'. Her eyes went wide as she realised her mistake, before narrowing again as she went to look past Ethan at Helena.

"Uhhh... That's my bad..." Amelia started to sheepishly apologise, only to trail off as she spotted Helena hunched over. "Are you alright?"

Helena didn't answer, her arms wrapped around her gut which was tossing and turning, making her feel incredibly nauseated. She hadn't felt like this a few minutes ago, so why now? And how?

My spell... I don't know who it affected... Helena thought, glancing up at Ethan and Amelia, both of whom now looked concerned for her. Did it hit Ethan? Or... Or her? Or... me? N-No, that's absurd! Maybe it hit both, and it just drained me? That's... more likely...

Helena's vision went dark, and the last thing she heard before falling unconscious was her name spoken by both Ethan and Amelia.

I feel... funny...

Helena managed to crack open an eye. Her eyelid felt so unusually heavy, and it didn't help that there was another feeling alongside it, one she couldn't quite identify. Forcing her other eye open, she turned her head, finding herself lying in the bed in the nurse's office.

I passed out? Helena thought, groaning as she tried to push herself into a sitting position. What on Earth happened to me?

As she managed to prop herself up, she focused in on the unidentified sensation in her body...
