Chapter #4

Silver Ticket

“Seriously, Adam? You aren’t gonna win”.

Alisa clicked her tongue, making a noise of displeasure. Glaring over at her dear boyfriend, Adam responded with a sheepish shrug, a small smile on his face as he clutched a chocolate bar to his chest. From where she was standing, she could just about make out bright, golden letters that read ‘Mallow Supreme’, along with a red bubble that said something about winning a trip for two to a candy factory. In all honesty, Alisa didn't see the point. Sure, a trip would be awesome, especially to a place that made sweets, but the chances of winning said trip were infinitesimally small. There was no point in getting her hopes up.

“Hey, you don’t know that!” Adam leveled his chocolate bar at her, looking rather confident. “I might get lucky!”

“Speaking from experience, you rarely get lucky…”

Ignoring Alisa’s muttered quip, he tore open the candy bar, revealing a rather plain bar of chocolate that had the words ‘Expansive Candy’ printed atop it. Said chocolate was briefly forgotten about in favour of the empty wrapper, which was torn apart by Adam as he searched for any indication that he might have won something. With a disappointed sigh, he soon admitted defeat, crumpling up the empty foil and stuffing it into his back pocket before taking a bite of the chocolate bar.

“Told you so,” Alisa gloated smugly, hands on her hips. “You really think a winning ticket would be in this backwater town? They’ll all be in major cities, if they exist at all! This whole thing could just be a marketing ploy to rack up sales and in a few months, they’ll say some random folks found the tickets and that’ll be that.”

“Sho peffimiftic!” Adam said through a mouthful of chocolate, earning himself an ‘Ugh’ of disgust from Alisa. Swallowing, he smirked at her, reaching into his pocket and pulling out his wallet. Counting out some loose change, he held it out to her. “Choose your poison, babe”.

“Really, Adam?” Alisa asked, staring at the coins. “Were you even listening to me?”

“Yeah, but whatever! This stuff is delicious!” Adam gushed, waving his half-eaten bar around. “It’s probably the best chocolate I’ve ever had! Even if you don’t win, you still gotta try some!”

“Fine, fine…”

Reluctantly scooping up the change, Alisa stepped around her boyfriend to look at the shelves of sweets, treats, and chocolate behind him. Expansive Candy had its own little section, a multitude of purple and gold wrappers arranged neatly for her to peruse.

How many different things does this company make?! Alisa wondered, scanning through her options. There were chocolate bars, bags of sweets, bags of chocolate sweets, marshmallows, strips of gum… honestly, she was spoiled for choice. In the end, she decided to keep it simple, having discovered that Adam, who she knew for a fact had money to spare, had given her just enough to afford the cheapest thing there. Grabbing a bar, she took it up to the counter, Adam in tow, and handed the change to the cashier. Thanking him, the couple left the shop and joined the busy high street, Alisa turning her spoils over in her hands. She had grabbed a ‘ChocoSlab’, which she thought was just an unnecessary name for what basically amounted to a bar of chocolate, but whatever.

“Go on, open it!” Adam said excitedly, stuffing the last of his Mallow Supreme into his mouth.

“Alright, alright, hold your horses!” Ripping open the foil wrapping, Alisa cocked her head curiously as, instead of the dull brown of chocolate peering up at her, she found the curious glint of silver instead. Narrowing her eyes, she carefully tore open the remaining foil, a small ticket fluttered free, gliding gracefully downwards to rest on the ground. “What the hell?”

The couple simultaneously knelt, exchanging a confused look before Alisa reached out to grab the fallen object. Turning it open, her eyes went wide with shock, while Adam let out a boisterous laugh, earning him a few looks from passersby. Opening her mouth to speak, Alisa found she couldn’t, overcome with shock and surprise, until she finally managed to force out a few words.

“Oh, what the actual hell?!”
