Chapter #8

A Swim in Sake

“Eh, might be best not to get her attention. Not yet, anyway. Gotta make sure she’s the type of person to be willing to help me out first.”

Quentin looked toward the giant wooden table below her chest, which had several pieces of loose paper and drinking cups just strewn about. The woman he was on, Rangiku, was lazily stamping and moving papers from her to-do pile onto the desk, clearly bored out of her mind.

Quentin chuckled at the sight. “Pfft, she reminds me of myself whenever Zeke says it’s tax season. Guess I can fly onto the side of the desk she’s not using…”

Sprouting his wings, he gets a running start and uses the surface of Rangiku’s breast as a sort of trampoline to launch himself into the air. After flying further upwards to get a better view of everything he locks in on a good place to land.

“Hm, near the upper-left corner of the table should work well! Better get going before-“ But Quentin was interrupted by the voice of an annoyed Rangiku behind him.

“Tch, a fly. Just lemme work in peace!” Her loud voice boomed out, quickly making Quentin he had flown up a little too high. He only managed to get one peek of Rangiku’s annoyed face before a massive hand slammed into him, sending him hurtling towards the table. He tumbled through the air at an intense speed, making it near impossible for Quentin to reorient himself or change his trajectory. Thankfully he hardened his skin just before getting hit, so he shouldn’t be hurt upon impact with the desk. Though no doubt it wouldn’t be a comfortable experience. Bracing himself, he prepared to hit the hard, wooden surface of the table…

SPLASH

…or so he thought. His fall was cut short as he landed in some deep liquid. It more or less had the consistency of water, but felt off. Quickly swimming to the surface, he found the same liquid surrounding him before being cut off by a curved, white wall. It was almost like staying in a giant, circular bathtub.

“Ugh, well at least I didn’t hit the table.” He spat out some of the liquid that got in his mouth, but it left behind a strange taste on his tongue. “The hell did I land in? Can’t be water, since I don’t remember any kind of water that tastes sweet. Almost tastes like… alcohol? I swear I’ve had something similar before.”

He continued treading the surface, his wings now too damp to fly with. The white curved walls stretched a good distance into the sky, but it wasn’t too high. Given a minute or so Quentin would probably be able to scale it. However, his thoughts were interrupted by the loud, distant voice of Rangiku beyond this container.

“Well, a little bit of sake can’t hurt, can it? If Nanao didn’t want me to drink it, then she shouldn’t have left the key to the drink cabinet in her room!” She let out a small giggle, putting an eerie sense of foreboding in Quentin. On another note, he finally remembered what the liquid tasted like.

“Oh, sake! That’s what this is!” Quentin laughed, glad to have figured it out. Unfortunately, that meant he knew what would be coming next. “M-Maybe she went to drink an unrelated cup of sake?”

His plea was answered by the sight of a hand encircling his liquid-filled container, which in reality was just a simple cup of sake. His body lurched upwards as it began to rise into the air, causing the sake around him to ripple and slosh around. Quentin managed to stay above the surface, but soon enough he was greeted by the smiling face of Rangiku looking at the cup.

“Aw crap.”

Quentin‘s view outside the cup transitioned from that of Rangiku’s face, to that of her mouth. Her mouth promptly opened, revealing the abyss that awaited him if he didn’t manage to escape in time. The cup began tilting, slowly sending a stream of sake into her mouth. Quentin desperately swam against the current, but despite his efforts he was slowly being pulled in towards her lips.
