Chapter #4The Witch Mall by: BeeJay The next morning, my room seemed no different. I could almost believe that what happened last night was just a dream. But then I opened up the book, and found that it still said it was a Book of Shadows. Seeing the silver light in my eyes when I looked in the mirror cinched it: I was a witch.
After getting dressed, I went downstairs for breakfast. Mom and Robin treated me like I was no different. I tried to act the same, even though I now had a secret: a secret that, if Tanith was right, I could never share with them.
"What are your plans for today?" Mom asked me.
"Mrs. Walters is taking me to Essex Street," I replied. At least I could tell her that.
******************************
The Essex Street Pedestrian Mall is one of the features of Salem. Instead of all the stores being in one building, like most malls, it's the street that unifies them. Cars aren't allowed, so people can cross whenever and wherever they want, just like they did before people had cars.
"So," I asked Tanith, as she parked, "what's the Witch Mall like? Is it like in the books and movies?"
"That would be interesting, wouldn't it?" she replied. "No, we don't have the power to conceal an entire street from cowan eyes. We go into the shops, like any other shoppers; then, the magick happens. I'll pay for your things today. Don't worry: if you decide to shop for yourself, you'll find that the prices in our shops are quite reasonable."
The first shop we went to was Witchery Wear, which always seemed to me kind of kitschy, with its witch-themed T-shirts and jewelry. Tanith led me to the back of the shop, until we came to a brick wall. "Observe," she said.
Pulling her wand out of her purse, she touched it to the wall, and began drawing a five-pointed star. Silver lines appeared as she drew. When the star was complete, she drew a circle connecting the points of the star, and I realized that she was drawing a pentagram.
When the pentagram was complete, the wall disappeared, revealing a shop within the shop. A chubby elderly woman was inside. "Blessed be," she said, beaming. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"Blessed be," Tanith replied. She indicated me. "This young witch is just starting upon the path."
She hugged me. "Blessed be, young maiden."
Realizing that this was a greeting, I replied, "Blessed be. I hope you can help me."
"I most definitely can." She took my measurements - even my head, which surprised me - and went into another room.
Not thirty seconds later, she returned, with a black bundle. "Here you are, my dear. Try it on."
The bundle turned out to be a black robe, with a matching pointed hat. Both fit me perfectly. "You had this all ready for me?"
"Magick, young one. I made that for you."
Tanith paid her, and we parted company, with the farewell, "Bright blessings." indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
