"We'll start with something simple," Mom said, as she handed me a package.
With some trepidation, I opened it.
I didn't have to worry: It was nothing more than a pink teddy, with matching panties.I gladly put them on, and spun around to show them off.
"I'm glad you like that," Mom said. "Now, let's teach you how to put your hair up."
"Is that really necessary?" I asked.
"It is if you don't want your hair getting tangled, sis," Kathy replied. "You've got to brush it with a hundred strokes in the morning; so why make that job harder?"
I looked at Mom. "Please tell me she's kidding."
"Not even slightly, sweetie. Watch and learn."
It seemed to take longer than it actually did, but my hair was pinned in place.
"See, sis?" Kathy said. "That wasn't so bad." She took out a jar. "Now, you need to learn how to put on a beauty mask."
"It helps fight pimples," Mom explained, "and repairs the damage the elements can do. Yours has another benefit: It acts as a depilatory, so you won't need to shave your face along with your pits and your legs." She smeared the contents of the jar over my face, creating a mask.
"I had no idea girls had to do so much work," I said. "I thought looking beautiful just came naturally."
"I'm flattered," Mom said. Taking out a small spray bottle, she said, "Open your mouth."
I did, and she sprayed the back of my throat twice. I gagged; the stuff tasted terrible, and it burned like battery acid as it flowed down my throat.
I tried to get up for a glass of water, but Mom and Kathy held me down. "The discomfort will pass," Mom said. "You can't drink anything, or say anything, until it's had a chance to set."
"After that," Kathy added, "you won't need to spray it again. And, when you speak tomorrow morning, you won't believe your ears."
"It's another thing we can undo when you get back," Mom said, "if you want to. Okay, sweetie: We're done with your evening beauty treatment. Just one more thing." She handed me a book of baby names. "Pick out a name that suits you; starting tomorrow, that will be your name."
"We'll be back bright and early tomorrow morning," Kathy said, "to find out what your new name is, and to help you through your morning beauty regimen. See you then, sis." She and Mom hugged me, and then left my room.
I flipped through the list of girl names, writing down the ones I liked, until I got too tired. Then I closed the book, turned out the light, and went to sleep.
