Chapter #5

The "HC" Virus

    by: Shad0ugeR3turns Author IconMail Icon
Jill Valentine, once a top member of S.T.A.R.S. elite task unit in Raccoon City, was now a member of the newly-formed BSAA organization. Today, she was on a mission to rendezvous with another agent once she had found her target: the newly-rumored "HC" virus.

A little over a month ago, another BSAA agent had gone missing during a mission. Hardly anything pointed to their disappearance except partial messages, giving only vague details and mentioning a "new strain of bioweapon, the HC virus, is highly-" before being cut off. Research had proven fruitless, nobody could find anything about the "HC" Virus, who developed it, who was selling it, or what it did. The whole time, the BSAA had been stumped at to what happened to the agent or what to do, but Chris Redfield had finally discovered a clue during his last mission. It mentioned the HC virus being held at a location to be picked up later. There was a small time-window, and since Jill had been the nearest agent in the field they'd dispatched her to quickly intercept and deliver it into BSAA hands.

Now, Jill sped towards the location marked on her GPS on a motorcycle, seeing the building she was meant to find the HC virus at coming up over the horizon. It was starting to get late, the sun would probably fall behind the horizon in less than half an hour, but the sharp-eyed agent could still make it out from this distance.

It looked like a normal, if slightly dilapidated, house on the outskirts of a Midwestern city, far enough from populated areas to go unnoticed yet not so far as to stick out like a sore thumb. Jill parked her motorcycle about three blocks away where there was still some people so she wouldn't draw any attention from anyone watching from the building. According to their intel however, there was nobody in the building yet, and wouldn't be until the time of pickup.

Not too many people were out now to notice her, and she didn't wear anything too conspicuous that may tell them she's a BSAA agent. Jill wore one of her simple field outfits, similar to her old S.T.A.R.S. uniform, but other than some straps for holding some supplies, she looked to be wearing a simple (if snug) grayish-blue shirt, and navy-blue (equally snug) cargo pants. Instead of a beret she wore a simple baseball cap. Jill had a decently-stocked inventory on her person that was well-hidden in her wardrobe, including a firearm, a combat knife, flashlight, spare ammunition, some medical spray and herbs. Most importantly, a state-of-the-art communicator that couldn't be jacked by outside interference and had the best range yet. It was meant to be a simple pickup mission before she'd be moving on to a safer spot, but all the past horrors Jill had been through before taught her to be prepared for anything.

Once Jill was right outside the target location, she stealthily made her way to the door with and drew her gun. She quickly pushed the door open and went in, checking all corners. The first room of the house was in decent shape, but mostly empty save for some empty, dusty shelves and a solitary worn-out chair. Jill scanned the room a few times, determined it was clear and moved on. She had to move fast, at the most she had about twenty-five minutes to find the HC virus before the buyer or whoever was mentioned in the message was supposed to arrive. They didn't have much to go off of, only the name. Nobody was even sure what the abbreviation stood for.

Jill went around the room, searching high and low, even pulling up a few floorboards to look under there. After quickly looking everywhere she could, she moved on to the next one.

After quickly searching every room on the first story, Jill moved upstairs. She still had about ten minutes to find the virus, fifteen at the most. But once she got upstairs, she froze; the lights were on in one of the rooms!

Jill stilled her breathing, feeling her heart pounding and a stray bead of sweat running down her face. Could this be a trap? She clicked the button on her communicator.

"Valentine here. Possible activity at target location," she whispered, keeping her gun pointed at the door the whole time. "Send backup if no response in five minutes."

"Copy that, Agent Valentine," her contact replied into her earpiece. "Be careful, we'll get eyes on your location ASAP." Jill took a slow, deep breath, and approached the door...
