After arriving home, I find my little sister Cali engaged in a spirited game of basketball with her friends, Josh and Kelsey. Just as I make my way up the driveway, Cali unexpectedly hurls the ball in my direction, aiming straight for my bag. Despite not being the sporty type, my reflexes kick in, and I manage to catch it just in time.
"You really need to be more careful," I scold her. "What if you had hit my bag and broken something?" I pat my bag, making sure the inverter is safe inside.
Cali rolls her eyes and retorts, "Yes, Mom." Then, under her breath, she adds, "Next time, I'll aim for more precious cargo." Kelsey bursts into laughter as I walk into the house.
Flopping my bag onto my bed, I retrieve the inverter and tuck it securely into my pocket. With hunger gnawing at me, I head to the kitchen to heat up the leftover Chinese food from the previous night. Since our parents are away celebrating their anniversary, my sisters and I have been relying on take-out to avoid any cooking mishaps. I settle down in front of the TV with a dinner tray, mindlessly flipping through channels while shoveling fried rice into my mouth. Eventually, I settle on Jeopardy and continue watching as I eat.
Once I finish my meal, I rinse off the plate and toss it into the dishwasher. Absentmindedly, I retrieve the inverter from my pocket, flipping it around in my hand, savoring its weight. It still amazes me that my grandpa and I were able to achieve this scientific feat. I love when something that seemed straight out of science fiction becomes a reality. Ever since I watched "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" when I was younger, I've always yearned for the shrink ray to be real.
Lost in my thoughts, my fingers accidentally press the engage button on the inverter. Before I can react, a crimson ray shoots out, hitting me squarely in the chest. I hastily set the inverter down as an inexplicable tingling sensation surges through me. The room begins to expand, and I realize with a jolt that I am shrinking.
