Augie is...frankly, given his situation, inarguably very, very lucky. Though he certainly didn't think so.
The 19 year old human had not been very lucky beforehand. His family was plagued with financial problems since around the first world war, and his attempt to strike out on his own in the (literally) big city had only led to him ending up a bum in what he thought was a totally normal cafe, hiding in and mooching food from the Little Daisy Cafe's pantry...
Then, about 4 months into that, the real trouble began. A one-eyed, massive Lynx (even by Anthro standards) entered the pantry for reasons that were unclear to Augie at the time. He was...the single most terrifying thing he had ever seen. And of course, when you freeze up in terror when you're supposed to immediately hide, you get caught...
The fact that he fainted as soon as he realized that the massive Lynx had actually seen him probably didn't help with his odds of escape. Then he got shaken awake, and questioned by a gruff voice with a thick accent about things like if he worked for the Bureau of Prohibition or the Marigold Hotel, neither of which Augie had any idea of, while being squeezed in the tight grip of this terrifying giant... He was pretty sure he was going to end up dead, even when Viktor (as he later found out was said Lynx's name) was convinced he wasn't lying about just being a thief. Which, from his understanding, at least meant Viktor was going to kill him quickly...
And then the cat who would soon be his boss showed up right before the larger one was going to finally finish him of, Mitzi May.
Which is why, as we join him in the modern day, the very, very lucky Augie Brown is now working as a "Greeter" for the Lackadaisy speakeasy. "Greeter" being a polite term given for a position that Augie never thought he'd actually end up working but one that Mitzi seemed to believe sincerely might bring some business back to the fading speakeasy...he was a (heavily indentured) prostitute...
