Chapter #5Pregnant with Puppies by: BeeJay "It can take 35 days to figure out if a dog is pregnant," Dr. Long said, looking over my results. "But, for we humans, it's quicker." She held out her hand. "Congratulations."
I was stunned. "Y-you mean it... it worked? I'm really pregnant?"
"Roughly three weeks along, I'd say," she replied. "That may not sound like a lot of time for a human pregnancy; but, since we're talking about puppies, that means you're actually in your second trimester."
"Wow. Already." I put a hand over my womb. "And I didn't even have morning sickness."
"That could still come, in just a few days. However, it will also be over and done with just as quickly. Who all in your house knows about this?"
"Just me and my folks."
She looked at my chart. "It says that you have two younger siblings. If I were you, I'd tell them, soon. You're about two and a half weeks away from showing; and, once that starts, you'll be amazed at how quickly you grow."
"Really?"
"Really. I'll see you again in two weeks; then, we'll get a look at how many you'll be having. After that, I'll be seeing you here once a week, until it's time for you to whelp."
So many things that I never imagined, that were now becoming routine. I drove home, carefully, not wanting to endanger my litter in any way.
When I got home, Allison and Michael were there. Allison was on social media, while Michael was playing video games. "Can you guys put pause on that stuff?" I asked. "There's something important I have to tell you."
I swear, I could almost hear their eyes rolling, as they put down their devices. "What's up?" Allison asked.
"There's something important I have to tell you," I replied. "But first, you have to promise that you're not going to tell anyone what I'm going to tell you."
"Not a peep from me," Allison said.
"Me neither," Michael added. "So, what is it?"
"I'm pregnant."
"Congratulations," Allison said. "Wait a minute: How could you get pregnant? My social life is wilder than yours."
"It happened in a lab. But that's not the wild part."
Allison shrugged. "So what's the wild part?"
"The reason I got pregnant in a lab is... I'm having puppies."
"What?" Michael asked. "Puppies? How? Why?"
"Medical science is how; money toward college is why. I underwent various procedures to get my uterus ready; then, I had the embryos implanted; and now, in less than two months, I'm going to give birth to a litter of puppies."
"Do... do you know what kind you're having?"
"Cocker Spaniels."
Allison's eyes lit up. "I love that breed! Can I have one?"
"Me, too!" Michael added.
"Hold your horses, you two. In the first place, this is to create hypoallergenic dogs; since neither of you are allergic, that means you're not on their list of priorities."
"Sorry."
"Besides, let's not forget, you're talking about my children."
