Chapter #5

What Now?

I gulped. "What... what do I do now?"

"That's up to you," the doctor said. "If you want, I can refer you to a clinic - a real one, not a church pretending to be a medical facility. I'm sure they will be discreet."

I thought about what the doctor said. I had often told myself that, if Charlotte were in this position, I would support whatever she wanted; I would even have been willing, if necessary, to walk her into the clinic and back, if that's what she wanted. Now, though, I had somehow had the choice presented to me; mine, to do as I saw fit. And I wasn't sure what I wanted.

"I think," I said, faltering a bit here and there, "I think... I think I want to keep it."

The doctor nodded. "If that's what you want. Let's bring your parents in." He called them back into the exam room.

Once Mom and Dad were sitting down, the doctor looked at me. I nodded, and said, "The reason that pregnancy test said I was pregnant... is because I am. I'm going to have a baby."

Dad was startled. "How is that possible? He was born a boy, not a girl; there's no way he's even got a womb."

"That's not exactly true," the doctor replied. "There is a rare condition called Persistent Mullerian Duct Syndrome. All fetuses begin development as female; later, about half of them begin developing into males. For some, however, this process of development is incomplete, and the male fetus is born with a uterus and fallopian tubes. I believe this is what happened to Sean, with the difference that his uterus developed the ability to gestate offspring. His girlfriend supplied the ovum, sperm and ovum met within his body, and here we are: the world's first cisgender pregnant boy."

"What should we do now, Doctor?" Mom asked.

"Sean has decided to have the baby; accordingly, I would like to refer him to a colleague of mine who is an obstetrician."

"Couldn't I just keep seeing you, Doc?" I asked.

"I understand your reticence," he replied. "I can even sympathize. However, you will require care that I am unqualified to give, if you want a healthy baby, and to remain healthy yourself. I can assure you, she is the soul of discretion, and will do nothing unless you approve it."

I nodded. I wanted this to go as well as possible. And so it begins, I thought. I'm pregnant; and now, I have to see an obstetrician.

First, though, there was someone else I had to tell.
