As the microwave spun around her Instant noodles, Belinda sighed.
When she graduated her technical college, her parents, friends, pretty much everyone told her she would be going places.
She bet they didn't guess those places would lead to working customer service at Yancy Robotics.
If you ever ran into a problem with your work Android, there was a good chance you would talk to Belinda Flores, former valedictorian.
She had a very pretty face, but said face was currently under a lot of stress. Her high school girlfriend, Jamie, had left her two weeks ago after getting a job opportunity in 6G-City, and she "couldn't deal with an aimless partner in her life."
A recent bout of layoffs meant she was doing twice the work at the same pay. And the company had a policy of not paying, but still expecting overtime pay.
The microwave beeped. She took out the steaming noodles, blew on them, and added the chicken flavor packet. They weren't the most nutritious, but with rent increasing and no partner to split it with, some corners needed to be cut.
Where did it go wrong? She thought.
She didn't have an answer. What had once been a bright eager soul had been crushed under the weight of expectation and reality.
As she turned, she saw someone had left some cake out. She recalled that one of the managers had brought in a cake to "boost morale" at the call center. Double fudge cake. She could tell it was synth coco, synth flower, synth everything.
Despite her lunch still in her hand, she felt desire, so she grabbed a plate and took a slice before returning to her cubicle.
