A group of people, including several passengers with hunting experience, several members of the football team, and the self-absorbed daughter of one of the first-class passengers, set out early the next morning to find some food. Her presence in the group was unwelcome, but she insisted on coming along, to ensure they found food she would enjoy.
While that was going on, I decided to explore the cave, and ended up on a small ledge with a nearly panoramic view of the area. We were definitely on a continent, with a chain of mountains and a large jungle in the distance.
One of the passengers had packed some high-powered binoculars for their vacation. They, like several others, hadn’t survived the crash, so it was decided that the survivors would avail themselves of the supplies. So they became mine. I took the binoculars out of my bag to get a better look at the area.
I was looking around when Kal appeared behind me, “There you are; I was wondering where you ran off to.”
“You know me,” I said without looking from the binoculars, “I’m always looking for new areas to explore.”
“I know; but perhaps you should curtail that for now. At least until we find out where we are, and what else is here with us.”
I hadn’t heard a single word Kal said in response to me, I was too fixated on what I saw in the distance – a single plume of smoke about 5 miles away.
