Oh, forget it, just quit whining and participat...

Eric considered just faking an injury or fleeing the park, but he knew his mom would find out eventually. Besides, he'd have to cry to fake an injury convincingly enough, and drowning people in his tears would just make everything worse.

Deciding he might as well try to participate, Eric squatted down to get a closer look at the Festival. Looking at the various attractions and events, he finally narrowed down his choices. There was a pie eating contest where it should be easy to just eat a whole table of pies and get it over with quickly, and a talent show where he can figure out some talent he doesn't need to move much for. Alternatively he can try just finding someone that looks nice and make a friend to get his mom off his back.
