Classes were boring as always, of course. Since practice always happened at the end of the day, it was always torture waiting around. What didn't help was that everyone seemed to be watching him like a hawk. It wasn't fair, honestly! He couldn't show for one second that he wasn't paying attention even once, or else everyone in the entire school would know, especially the teachers.
He guessed it couldn't be helped - the entire roof of the school had to be renovated and replaced just for him to be able to take classes to begin with! He figured homeschooling would be better for actually teaching him stuff, but his mom and dad had insisted on him going to school to hang out with kids his age. Ah well, Jake wouldn't complain - he wouldn't be able to go to practice if he had to go through something as lame as homeschooling.
No matter! Soon, the last bell of the day would ring, and the first chance he got, he would hightail it out of here to the football field out in the back! But wait, calling it a field would kinda be wrong at the same time. Sure, it was "expanded greatly for the purposes of proper accommodation", but all that meant was that there were about 50 acres of forest that were reserved for "recreational purposes". Some of the trees weren't even cut down or anything, they were just left as they were. Officials said it was to give an advantage to normal kids in navigating the field, but no one really though that was the case. It's not like he was even gonna be on the field himself half the time!
It was why the Percy Badgers cheered the loudest out of everyone for their star player and outfielder. Every single team that they had faced so far had immediately conceded before half-time ended. They always had some rules to keep things fair, like only allowing him to flick the ball with his finger, or not being allowed to move from position, but in the end, whether it was because of a lack of guts or something else, he's yet to have a full game with anyone!
It was fun dominating the competition sure, and he enjoyed being able to participate, but just once, he wanted a real challenge. Just one!
He knew it was gonna happen, though. Next game, they were going against the Vain Jaguars. Legends say that they're the one junior middle school team in the country that's been able to win every game they've been in for 6 years straight. They didn't even have a single giant on their team, but that didn't stop them from being able to singlehandly route out dozens that had the good fortune to have one.
Granted, he didn't know if they had ever faced anyone as tall as him. Even by giant standards, 2000 feet was a really uncommon height. Still, he was finally going to get a good match! Finally!
