Chapter #4

The Wolfes and the Beanstalk

    by: ThunderX Author IconMail Icon
The family had seen a beanstalk that rose high into the sky.

"Been there, done that," James said.

He knew he'd heard that story before. Then, someone came climbing down the beanstalk. It looked like a werewolf in tattered clothes.

"Thank you for rescuing me," he said. "My name's Seymour Growlmeyer. I've been stuck at the top of the beanstalk for 18 years."

"Eighteen years?" Robert asked. "I can see your clothes seem too small for you."

"I didn't have anything else to wear," Seymour said. "During my time up there, I had been protecting these magic beans."

He showed them a bag of beans in his hand.

"Oh, brother," Robert said.

"Out of all of the beans," Seymour explained. "Only one is horribly evil."

"How can you tell which on is evil?" Hanna asked. "They all look the same."

"Exactly," Seymour said. "That's why I never planted them. You never know which one produces evil."

"We'll take the beans off your hands," Robert said.

He wanted Seymour gone and the beanstalk to go away.

"Thank you, sir," Seymour said, handing the beans to him.

Suddenly, the beanstalk began to disappear. The hole where it was planted filled back up as if it never grew.

"I must return to my family," Seymour said. "I hope they missed me."

He walked off the property, leaving the Wolfes in confusion.

After chores, the family spent the afternoon staring at the beans.

"Do you think we should burn them?" Robert asked.

"What if they're fireproof?" Julia asked.

James had an idea.

"Maybe we can plant the beans," he said. "If we come across the evil bean, we'll destroy it."

Everyone took a bean out of the bag and held it in their hand.

"I know how to decide who plants the first bean," Hanna said. "We're going to draw straws, and whoever wins plants their bean first."

"Aw, man," Robert groaned. "I stink at drawing."

"Not that kind of drawing," Hanna said.

She placed an assortment of straws on the table, arranged from longest to shortest.

"Whoever gets the longest straw plants their bean first," she explained.

Then, she shuffled the straws into a random order and held them in her hand.

Who draws the longest straw?
