Chapter #4

Accident in the Lab

    by: Tonniton Author IconMail Icon
You've done it! You've finally created a size-changing machine, a real life Shrink Ray!

A huge, futuristic looking raygun hums with power in the middle of the room. Jolts of electricity discharge from the tip of its long cannon, striking the tiled floor beneath it. The lab stool you just used for target practice is nowhere to be seen, presumably shrunk into practically nothing. Or maybe its molecules got destabilized and it's just a bunch of unconnected nanoscopic particles floating around this bleached white room. Maybe you're breathing it in at this very moment...

Whatever the case may be, you don't see it anymore. You go over to the zone it was in, the many caged animals in the next room over chirp, growl, squeak, yowl and everything in between as you squat down to get a good look. Probably spooked by the last test. Their cages rattle as they claw at them.

One of these beasts will be the next test subject. Your first living target. If all goes according to plan, it won't make the target implode, or explode, or harm it in any permanent way. They should be able to survive it... As long as you don't try to both shrink and expand the subject at the same time. That was your predecessor's first and only mistake.

The explosion that he caused cost the company millions of dollars! They couldn't even find Dr. Grossman's no doubt mangled beyond belief body in all the rubble his careless cockup brought upon itself! That was months of research gone in one big bang! The company can't afford to botch this, but who cares about it, YOU can't afford to botch this! You haven't got a fraction of the money needed to build and rebuild this experiment! Plus, you've grown attached to a few of these test subjects. You might've even considered taking a few of them home... If you had any home but the lab. The others, well... Contributions to science. It's the most those simple minded beasts could ever hope to achieve in this lifetime. Now where is that stool...?

You are so focused that you don't hear the machine whirl and buzz with energy, preparing to fire again!

*Vrrr-Veeee!*

The high pitched whine of the ray is enough to make you look back. Too late to get out of the way, but just in time to get a face full of blue energy! You are shot forward with its force and knocked down to a new size...

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. 3 Inches Tall!

*Noteb*
2. 1 Inch Tall!

3. Even Smaller?

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
