Chapter #6

Looking for a Fellow Guard

by: BIG BAD WOLF is Merry Author IconMail Icon
"The human in question is a Guard of the city Haven, just as I am," the lizardman said. "I'm under orders to locate as many of my fellow guards as possible, and return them, and/or their kin back home."

"And, what if this human is already dead?" you asked.

The lizardman grinned, and set a pouch on the table.

You walked over, and opened it. There was the head of a hobgoblin.

"The guard he killed was a mere rookie, who had less than six months on the job," the lizardman said. "Said guard had been visiting family when the Shrinking occurred. This one decided to stomp him and his whole family, for no real reason, other than they could. Thus, I separated his head from his shoulders, so that I can at least tell my commander that justice was met out for the guard he killed."

"Your commander must be fairly strong, if you're willing to do that for a fresh guard," you said.

The lizardman grinned. "They are a human female, that's six inches tall, although their co-commander is one of the snakefolk, for situations that require size. I've worked with them for years. They kept the guards together during the Shrinking, stopped the foolish rioters that wanted to take over, simply asking them if any knew how to run a city - none knew how. Thus, Haven is still a safe place for humans to live."

"So, because you respect this shrunken human, you're willing to seek out your fellow guards, return them, or their families, to Haven, and failing that, kill those who have killed them," you said. "That could lead to a war, you know."

"There's already one," the lizardman said. "Those that see the shrunken humans as people, and those that don't. I'm willing to kill every last one of you, if that's what it takes to save my fellow guard."

"Thought that you would Heal us?" you asked.

The lizardman chuckled. "Yes, and then kill you."

"I see," you said.

"Good," the lizardman said, as he got out a poster, showing an image of a human family, the poster saying "Five Thousand Gold for the Safe Return of These Humans to Haven, or the Head/s of Their Killer/s."

"As you can see, the message is rather clear," the lizardman said. "Them alive, or the heads of their killers."

You looked at him. "I'll see what I can do."
