He had a stroke of luck when the shoe just flew beyond him, the only effect it had on him being the shockwave of that new step sending him flying a certain distance again, making Derek tired of how everyone's feet carried him around, something he wouldn't be able to fix until he got the group's attention.
Dan reached the living room and headed to the table for a snack, but Adric stopped his hand, saying "Take off your shoes, you'll dirty the floor". The teen did not want to, but he complied to the birthday boy's logic, taking a chocolate bar before going to the hallway to set his shoes and socks there.
Dan took the bubblegum out of his mouth to bite the chocolate, and having noticed the gum was already out of flavor, he threw the chewed snack away. Derek really believed the universe hated him today when the massive candy came down on top of him like a meteor, most of his body now buried under the sticky blob, making him question if his day could get any worse.
As if he had tempted fate, Dan remembered that the kid had told him to not dirty the floor, so he was forced to walk towards the chewed sweet, the living speck struggling under his gum going completely beneath his notice.
