The world that Amber knew wasn't a natural one like you would expect. You would expect a destroyed city or two followed by miles and miles of dying nature till you find anouther empty city, but this world is almost completely city ruins that stretch out seemingly forever. This was part of how their Goddess toyed with them, every few days new cities would appear seemingly randomly. Everyone knew that these cities indicated the Goddess would soon appear but they also knew that these cities are the only real source of food and water as the Goddess intended. Amber and Katie always marveled at the cities which could appear out of nowhere replacing any ruins that once stood there.
When the cities appear the girls would hide with mom a few miles away while the two men would collect food and water for the group.
