Chapter #6

Past the second grasspatch

    by: sneakyk Author IconMail Icon
As you survey your surroundings, you take a quick stock of the situation around you. Turning back, you can see that the Poochyena seems practically rooted in place at the edge of the grass patch. Thinking from your pursuer's perspective, you get a better understanding of why. Certainly, he could likely outspeed you and catch your tiny form into his maw...but not without some level of resistance. This, in turn, would cause a commotion that might attract unwanted attention from Pokemon Trainers. Although the gigantic Poochyena is far more powerful than you, it is surely far lesser threat than anyone armed with a trained team of Pokemon.

Although humbled by just how low on the totem pole you are, you are relieved to realize that in this complex ecosystem, many of your natural predators have checks to keep them in place as well. Calming down, you turn to face the apron-clad woman you saw before, no doubt a PokeMart employee. A more thorough inspection of the glass containers she's holding makes your blood run cold. People. Real live tiny people, just like yourself, lie stored within the containers. Thank the heavens she hasn't seen you yet! But with this knowledge comes the dreadful realization that she is just as much a threat as the Poochyena..perhaps even a greater one. You give the PokeMart worker wide berth as you quickly make your way for the next grasspatch, hoping the woman will remain too fixated on her phone to notice you.

Closer. Closer. Almost....there! You made it. You step into the grass, rustling it ever so slightly, and then turn to observe your situation. The Poochyena remains in the first grasspatch, glaring at you viciously before finally turning tail and retreating. The PokeMart employee lifts her head to observe the nearby Pokemon, but is thankfully clueless about your whereabouts. You breathe a deep sigh of relief as you assess the situation. You can feel your tiny heat pounding from the exilleration of what you just experienced. You survived your first encounter in this frightful world of giants, but you have quit a ways to go if you're to make it back to the city...and what then? Will you be able to avoid winding up imprisoned and enslaved like the others the woman has captured?

Thinking too far ahead isn't going to do you any good. You continue your way through the underbrush, not wanting to be in the tall grass for long. As you make your way through the grass, you hear voices coming from the south. Getting atop a discarded potion, you a pair of 10-odd year old boys heading northward from Pallet town. They would happen to be Chase and Trace, two up-and-coming trainer about to begin their first journey. The boys are stopped by the employee, who hands both of them a potion. Soon they begin storming their way towards the very grasspatch you're in. Terrified of getting trampled unaware, you quickly head northward until you bump into ledge....dead end. You curl up against the rock wall and hope that the boys won't stomp you down unaware.

THUD. THUD. THUD. The boys' sneakered feet stomp towards you, their footsteps growing louder with every booming thud. KTHUD KTHUD KTHUD. Your body is engulfed in shadows as Chase's towering figure bursts into your field of vision. Whooooosh . You catch a brief glimpse of his smooth, towering, slightly sweaty legs and the dirty treads of his sneaker before KTHOOOOM it comes crashing down with a thud, just narrowly missing your tiny form. It's all you can do to stifle a scream. As the boy lifts his foot you turn to see bent grass and the distinct marks of shoe-treads on the dirt-patches the grass failed to cover. THUD. THUD. The boys continue to walk past you. Just when it seems like they're about to pass out of the patch, you hear a rustle coming from the west, followed by a snarl.

"Rattata!" A wild Rattata speaks out in a voice near indistinguishable from a snarl. For whatever reason, it has decided to challenge the boys. You hear the distinctive pop of a Pokeball striking the ground, foollowed by the high-tech whirrring that comes when a Pokemon has released. "Aw man. Looks like you're pretty quick on the draw Chase! I think I'll head on and find some Pokemon to fight on my own!" One of the boys' voices calls out. Getting back on the potion, you can see that the boy in bluejean shorts is choosing to stand his ground alongside his Charmander, while the other is heading on down the path.

You would rather not get caught in the middle of the mess when the grasspatch becomes a warzone. You crawl along the side of the ledge, taking advantage of the distraction provided by the gigantic boy and slip your way between a gap between the edge of the ledge and a signpost. You careful ascend up a steep hill and find yourself back on the road.

You now currently stand on an east-west path just to the north of route 1's first ledge. Looking to the east, you can see the PokeCenter employee sitting on the ledge, still fixated on her phone. The sounds of screams coming from her collection of tiny prisoners should be enough to deter you from approaching her, but she does have a pair of back pockets you could hide inside of. To the south is the grasspatch from before, where Chase and his Charmander are no farming off of the various wild Pokemon, and likely will be for a while. To the north and west are dense treeline. While most trainers wouldn't opt to pass through them, you should be able to slip through at your tiny size, though there's no guarantee that you'd be safe from wild Pokemon should you head into the wooded area. You can hear the sound of a young boy coming from up north, as well, though you can't get a clear view through the trees.

Finally, to the east the path continues before snaking north, a large patch of grass situated right beside it. Trace seems to be currently occupying the eastern grasspatch, already engaged in a Pokemon battle of his own.

You have the following choices:

1. Head north through the treeline

*Noteb*
2. Head east along the path

*Noteb*
3. Try to sneak into the PokeMart employee's back pocket.

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
