Chapter #5

Zarnat

“In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight.”

You fucking hate that song. But you say nothing. You just sip your beer in peace.

Your name is Thun Undinzun, and you hold the rank of Master Sergeant in the Sanctuary Marine Corps. You are the senior NCO of the Marine contingent assigned to the Vanguard, one of the first two ships constructed utilizing sphere technology and human experience. The Vanguard and her sister ship the Ranger could probably together go toe to toe with the smallest of Harvester hive ships. But that wasn’t their purpose. Their purpose was to scout out Harvester weaknesses and activities that would help build the fleet that would eventually end the existential threat of the Harvesters.

The Vanguard was scheduled to depart on its first mission in a few days. You and your Marines were having a few drinks in a tavern the Marines had taken over as their own. The owner was a human who had moved to Sanctuary to open a human style bar and grill. The decor includes a jukebox with human songs from more than seventy years ago. Most of the songs are interesting, and a few are quite enjoyable. But there’s that one fucking song.

“Near the village, the peaceful village, the lion sleeps tonight.”

Since this was a marine drinking hole, nobody was going to play a song that pissed off the top ranking NCO in the place.

Then the sailors from the Pioneer showed up in your bar.

The Pioneer was the sister ship to the Vanguard and the Ranger, and was still under construction. The personnel assigned to the Pioneer either didn’t know or didn’t care they had wandered into Marine territory. They obviously weren’t going to leave anytime soon, and one of them kept on playing that same fucking song!

(Does a fight break out between the Marines and the skeleton crew of the Pioneer?)
