Chapter #6

A Matter Of Conscience

by: Alex Blades Author IconMail Icon
None of your clothes fit you at this reduced scale, so you restore yourself to normal and throw on a pair of jeans and a clean t-shirt. Strangely, there's a little too much room when you slip your feet into your sneakers, as though your height hasn't completely returned. That's not good. Perhaps the remote did suffer some water damage. You quickly undress and give yourself another inch or so, which seems to do the trick. Everything fits just fine now. It seems that only the restore button is faulty.
"I'll have to keep that in mind," you think to yourself as you step out of the bedroom.
It sounds like Jennifer is still awake. There's muffled rock music coming from her room, along with faint footsteps here and there. She pops her head out the door as you start down the stairs and asks, "Where are you going?"
"Just going out back for a while," you tell her.
"Don't go spying on that Milton girl, Robby. That's a bad look."
You glance up at the ceiling and let out a sharp exhale. "I'm not spying on Haley. I never was. Emily made that up."
Jennifer isn't convinced. "Look, dude, it's perfectly fine to like somebody, but don't be a creep about it. You'll end up like that freakazoid brother of hers. The one they shipped back to Illinois."
"He went back to his dad's because he was sick."
"Yeah," your stepsister nods, "in the head. The little bastard kept trying to look into my window to see me naked. That's what I'm saying, Robby. Don't be that guy. You're better than that. Plus, I mean, we can't ship you back to your dad. Technically he lives here, so what do you think they'll do? They'll lock you up."
"I'm not spying on anybody," you groan, but Jennifer shuts the door midway through.
You take another step and stop. You were actually planning to spy on Haley. More accurately, you were going to eavesdrop. After that conversation, however, there's a pang of guilt in your stomach that makes you reconsider. What Jennifer described wasn't really spying, it was peeping, but what's the difference? They're both invasions of privacy. Even if you found out that Haley likes you, that she wants you to ask her out, you'd enter the relationship knowing that you betrayed her trust.
"She'd never know," you think. How would she ever find out about the remote control unless you told her? The real question is whether or not you'd be able to live with yourself.
         Would you?

You have the following choices:

*Pen*
1. Yes. You have to know for sure how she feels.

*Pen*
2. No. It's just not right.

*Pen* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
