Chapter #5

Two in a spaceship in void

It’s not that strange to be in the same ship on a Grey, at least statistically speaking. Millions of years ago, before the Federation, before the Canis empire, before all the current chaos, this alien race dominated all the galaxy. They sure weren’t the first to discover a way to travel between the stars, but they were the most efficient. So In a few thousand years, they colonized 90% of all planets of the Milky Way, establishing cities, trades hub, space stations, spaceports, gateways and sectors becoming one of the most powerful entities in the known space.

One most peculiar thing was also the absence of conflicts in that period thanks to two important factors: they were a peaceful race and they controlled pretty much all the resources and infrastructures of the Galaxy (it was impossible for the other space empire to do anything without the consent of the Grays). They really didn’t care about all this political nonsense, about claims, crusades or manifest destiny. They were interested to live well their long life… and they did. Meanwhile on Earth humans were in the middle of the Late Stone Age, the Grey Commonwealth reached its peak in terms of luxuries, power, technological advancement and extension. "Although there are 100 thousand million stars in the galaxy, the number of Grays is at least 1000 times that" is one of the phrases that described the vastness of the domain of this alien race.

In fact, this was evident for many planets, especially the most ancient, completely excavated of every resource or covered by immense agglomerations of buildings and structures. Many of the lesser alien races went extinct for the lack of food and goods. This then led to a change of course for the Grays. The Commonwealth decided to reduce population and try to preserve the many planets in its possession to safeguard future species. Billions of them abandoned their planets and adapted to living in space inside their spacecraft.

To allow the development of other alien species, the Grays decided to grant light-years of space to these emerging civilizations and also try not to interfere with their growthist. After having dominated the galaxy for all this time now they were just curious to see and assimilate other cultures and customs. In this case, the Earth was one of the most interesting destinations in recent centuries.

Now the Grays are a background race compared to all the events that happen in the galaxy, there are still many but they live carefree and comfortable lives thanks to the infinite riches that their ancestors had at the same time their technologies have come under the control of the new empires.

You were slowly walking on the grey and metallic surface of the spaceship to reach the antenna. It has been giving problems for a few days and in the end, your owner decided to send you outside and see what is wrong. It wasn’t your first time but you already are very small compared to all the other species and walking surrounded by cosmic emptiness does not put you at ease at all.

“Hurry up Earthy, we are gonna miss the show at this pace” Qurt's voice echoes in your helmet, lightly numbing you. Once again you forgot to turn down the volume of the communicator. With a sigh, you finally reach the antenna and begin to move some cables to see if something changes.

You ask him if the signal is any better… No response. You ask again, the same silence. Then you hear something: “Munch, munch… Oh sorry, I got bored and I was eating some pizza. Nope, there is still no sign- munch, munch” Sometimes you regret letting your master discover Earth cuisine, but in the end, he bought you for that too. The only thing that you complain about Qurt is increasing laziness and weight, this means an increase of chores for you. Surely you have been much luckier than others, on average humans have a better chance of surviving if taken by the Grays than by- “Stop everything! There is the signal!” again you forgot to turn down the volume.

You finally re-enter the spaceship smoothly. Following the small corridor, you arrive at the "automatic transport" which allows you to cover immense distances, for you, in a few minutes. You can already hear the volume of the show and Qurt's delight in seeing it. He is always happy to watch that broadcast. You instead observe your master while he eats pizzas with great voracity. You can very well notice at least 5 dishes already emptied on the table... His grey belly seems to be full, but you are proven wrong with each new bite.

“Oh, you are here! Come, I left you a small piece” he says with a little laugh and without too much delay you are taken by his three-fingered hand and placed on his belly. You would have preferred if he had washed his fingers, now in addition to your solid smell, you also emit a fragrance of tomato and oil (or at least those available substitutes). Life could be better, for sure, but much worse too. With this thought, you take the fragment of the piece of pizza and start eating it.
