Chapter #4

Ran to the downstairs bathroom

by: Thomas Johnson Author IconMail Icon
Anthony sped walk in front of the mover, who was carrying a box of his things. He pointed upstairs, "It's one of the ones up there! I think my room is the empty one because Alexis got in here before me".

"Sounds good little man. Go take care of business" the mover said as he chuckled and hauled Anthony's belonging upstairs. Anthony then turned his direction to the open bathroom door to his left and ran at top speed to avoid having an accident in his pants. He got inside and didn't even have time to shut the door before he started urinating. This was fine with him because the bathroom was really dark for some reason, even though it was the middle of the day. He couldn't see any windows, not even in the shower, just some vents for the air to circulate.

He observed what he could from the light that was brought in from the open door. It was a relatively decent-sized bathroom, with a sink, toilet, and a shower. There wasn't a bathtub though, which meant that this restroom was strictly for showering and maybe even brushing your teeth. Anthony's mom and older sister used to always hog the restroom at their old house, and leave all of their things all over the counter. The counter in this restroom was pretty small, and there was little storage space, so it was perfect for somebody like Anthony.

"Anthony I know you're not using the restroom with the door open again. You know that people don't want to catch you half-naked!" Arianna called out from downstairs, after seeing her son run into the restroom.

Anthony gulped. "Uh, no mom! I shut it!", he said as he reached his leg over and nudged the door shut, which made the restroom now pitch black. Anthony couldn't see a damn thing, but he was still able to finish up using the toilet without making a mess (or so he believed). Now, the real problem presented itself: Anthony had zero clue where the light switch was. He tried to remember what he could about the layout of the restroom and decided it would be best to walk around with his arms out in front of him so he could scour the walls for the light switch.

He searched the wall behind him and found nothing except for the empty towel rack. He then started to feel on the wall that the door was on and stopped when he felt something a bit odd about the wall. It didn't feel like the rest of the wall, as it was not as firm. Anthony applied a bit of pressure into it and found himself pushing part of the wall in.

He immediately pulled his hand back, "Oh shoot, I broke it! Mom's gonna kill me!" he started to worry, still standing in the dark. The sounds of a few clicks in the walls interrupted his worrisome thoughts and they eventually grew louder. A noise then occurred in the bathroom, like something heavy being dragged, which made Anthony jump. He turned toward the source, as it seemed to be coming from the shower, and he saw that lights had appeared. The thing was, they seemed to be ascending as if there were some sort of hallway there now.

"What the? What the heck is that?" He said as he observed the lights. His 8-year-old brain started to fire up, "Secret tunnel!" he exclaimed, abandoning all fear he once possessed. Anthony started to head toward the tunnel, to follow and see where the lights led.

The tunnel wasn't too long and before he knew it, he had reached a metal door. He could see that there was a light on behind the door, from the light that was escaping from underneath. The fear from before had once again resided in him. "Maybe I should get Dad or Joey to come to look at this with me," he said to himself, nervously. Anthony then envisioned Alexis calling him a baby and a Scaredy cat for not wanting to venture into this secret room by himself. That was all the motivation it took, and he put his hand on the steel doorknob. "I can do this! And then this secret hideout will be all mine and Alexis can't call me any mean names!". Anthony twisted the doorknob and stepped inside.

When he stepped inside, he gasped. Inside, there was a single lightbulb hanging from the ceiling. The light illuminated a large object, which was covered in cream-colored sheets. There was also a smaller table-looking object near the larger one, just to the side of it.

"Woah, this is like where batman lives," he said quietly as he looked around.

He walked over to the larger object and peeled the sheet away.

It was a large plexiglass cylinder with an odd metal platform inside of it, and some sort of tablet embedded into the inside of it. Outside of the cylinder, there was some sort of sci-fi-looking computer, with two large buttons on the top. As he got closer, he could see that one was red, which said Off, and the other was green, but said On. As he inspected the cylinder, he could see that it had door handles on it, meaning that one was able to step inside. Near the handle, he could see a notice.

NOTICE: MAXIMUM CAPACITY OF 2 SUBJECTS

"Subjects? Like homework?" he said, continuing his search for clues.

His attention then turned to the smaller object that was still covered. He pulled that sheet off and revealed it to be a tray, like what surgeons usually place their instruments on, and a small book. It didn't have too many pages, and sort of looked like a typed-up instruction manual.

Joey picked up the book and inspected the cover, which said:

"Modi-Chamber Owner's Manual by Dr. Rubenstock

PLEASE READ BEFORE USE.

FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN DEATH OR OTHER UNCERTAINTIES
"

"This is a really big book," Anthony said to himself as he flipped through the pages quickly.

What does he do?

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. Try to figure out the machine on his own

*Noteb*
2. His parents call out to him

3. Read the manual

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
