This choice: Haley begins her new life as a college student—a few years late, but still! • Go Back... Haley couldn't put into words just how grateful she was to know that there was someone at USC Upstate that she knew.
Being a first-generation college student was hard enough. But unlike a lot of her friends from high school, she hadn't gone to school right out of the gate. Taking a year off might have been regular, but nearly three? Most of the people Haley went to school with would have been almost out by now, and that's assuming they didn't get their two-year business degrees... Gawd, maybe that would have been smarter than signing up for English classes...
This whole college experience was so new to her. Haley was in over her head. Her mama had never gone to college, and Mack had barely even tried before she dropped out. That inexplicable feeling of unease, of not belonging... it only felt further exacerbated once she set foot on campus. Sure, she knew that she was going in the right direction. That much she was positive about. But the faces, the people she met... it all felt mixed up somehow...
But again, she wasn't in this alone. Thank God. There was someone that she recognized. And thankfully, someone who was a little further along than her, happy to help her figure some things out...

[In this chapter, the role of Haley's College Connection will be played by...]
Tara West (No Relation)—Haley can't quite explain why, but she really clicks with this woman. As a part of USC Upstate's program for first-generation college students, Tara was "assigned" to be Haley's helping hand through figuring out campus life. They actually went to school together, and even have the same last name! If it weren't for that big nose of hers, people might mistake them for sisters! Tara's two years older than her, but a Senior to her Freshman. She seems really put-together, and she and Haley click right away. That being said, she's definitely put on the freshman fifteen once or twice during her stay at USC Upstate. She knows all the best places to chow down...
Danielle Gosset—Dani and Haley went to school together, and... well, it wasn't exactly sunshine and rainbows back then. For a long time, Dani used to be really jealous of Haley. But now that the tables have turned, she's willing to let that slide a little. After all, Haley's kind of pathetic. And hopeless. At least, without her help, she will be. Dani took a year off and lives on-campus instead of at home. She's actually slimmed down a little from her days as "Doughy Dani", believe it or not—she's still kinda chubby, and still hasn't grown out of her Hot Topic phase, but she seems much more put together now that she's not living at home. She and Haley might actually be able to be... friends! indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
