Nick's smile faded as Stephanie pulled out a seemingly ordinary looking bottle of laundry detergent, no different than anything he might find in the chemical aisle of a grocery store.
"What's that?" he asked, expecting something much more impressive with all the build up. "Just some laundry detergent?"
"Just some laundry detergent, he says," Stephanie chuckled. "This here is the top of the line quality product in do-it-yourself disguise kits. You won't find something more reliable or versatile in the market."
"Disguise kits? How's that going to help me?"
"What better way to get to know someone better than to spend a day in their shoes? Or, in this case, clothes. All you have to do is collect an outfit last worn by your intended target. Then you just wash the clothes with this detergent and voilà. The next time someone wears the washed outfit, they will turn into an exact clone of the cloth's owner."
"For real?" It was Nick's turn to laugh now. "You're having me for a laugh, right? There's no way something like that exists."
"Laugh all you want, it's the truth. I'm so confident that I'm willing to give you this sample for free. Give it a try and see if you like it. What have you got to lose?"
"Nothing, I suppose. I still don't see how this is supposed to help me, even if it works."
"Oh, you'll figure it out. Now run along! And hope to see you soon, Mister Wilde."
Nick couldn't help but feel like he was being hurried out the door after Stephanie offered him the plastic bottle containing the laundry detergent. There had to be enough in here for at least a dozen washes of clothes and she seemed very confident that it would work. Almost like she reminded him of a certain badger he once knew...
As he stepped out onto the street, Nick stared at the bottle he was holding. Well, he had it. What did he have to lose, like Stephanie said? The only question was whose clothes would he be borrowing for a time?
