This choice: Maybe something I can put out later • Go Back... Because every fantasy setting needs these creatures of the night. And there are loads of ways to do them ranging from the original myth where vampires are merely zombies with a thirst for blood, anime vampires, stereotypical die in the sunlight, Blade, and so on. And like usual I'll mix and match whatever I feel like. And of course you can make your own clans and bloodlines too.
Most of the inhabitants of Illyrium absolutely hate and fear vampires for reasons that ought to be obvious given that we are dealing with corpses who drink blood possessing fantastical powers. In some places in Illyrium just the mere accusation of something being a vampire can start up a lynch mob because the past taught them it's better to be safe than sorry. No one wants to end up like villagers who had their homes painted red in their own blood. Of course not all vampires are completely evil, some are definitely good people trying to live their lives in peace after being cursed, but outliers do not prove the whole. And such they form clans out of security from the living, to pool resources, and the fact that vampires tend develop psychological bonds with their clan leaders, viewing them as parental figures.
A clan leader can go by many different titles, but being a clan leader is also physical designation. A clan leader will be the largest and strongest vampire of their clan with evolved versions of their clan's abilities. A vampire can undergo the process of becoming a clan leader by taking in the blood of the last leader, or by asserting enough dominance over the leaderless clan.
Many different clans have risen up and fallen over the centuries, bloodlines either thriving or failing to adapt, a vampire from the Babyblooddrinker Clan will have its own unique abilities that are different from the WeEatHearts bloodline. However, they all share the same general characteristics to some degree.
1: inhuman strength and reflexes
2: enhanced senses
3: viewing the clan leader as revered parental figure
4: a weakness to silver and blessed weapons
5: a weakness to the sun
6: vampiric seduction/hypnosis in most cases.
7: a vampire lord transformation
Here are two major clans that haunt Illyrium.
Night Spawn vampires: The most common clan and far reaching bloodline in the world of Illyrium. Night Spawn Clan Vampires generally look like this https://www.deviantart.com/b133te/art/La... while their lords look like https://www.deviantart.com/sarafiel/art/... and are looked down by many other clans. Vampires in the Night Spawn clan are resentful spiteful monsters who reside in dark forests, sewers, and caves making nests of bone to wait for the sun to fall. Out of all clans they are the weakest to sunlight, turning to ash within minutes of contact. They do not have the hypnotic gaze ability as other bloodlines do, and it drives them to the blackest rage that even some breakaway bloodlines that stem from them somehow gained it. Their three well known abilities are being able turn into swarms of bats, spitting poison, and entering a beserker state.
Which brings us to the Moonlight Coven Clan. A successor bloodline to the Night Spawn clan that managed to become a major clan in only fifty years before the start of the story. Unlike their parent bloodline they do posses the typical vampiric seduction gaze and even retain their original form. They owe their success by mostly targeting the lowest rung of society as well as remote communities that are ill defended.
Moonlight Coven vampires are known for their aggressive behavior, retractable claws, and when they become extremely angry the mask drops revealing a black eyed monster with rows of sharpened teeth. Older and more established clans view them as young upstarts descended from a baseborn line, and very willing to use Moonlight Coven vampires as an expendable resource. No one knows what their vampire lord forms look like. Like the Night Swarms they are weak to sunlight, but are able to stay out in the sun for one hour before it turns deadly for their health. It is assumed they can also use the same abilities as their parent clan.
Feral vampires: Feral vampires are ghoulish monstrosities that are the result of either a vampire failing to sustain their bloodlust, a feral vampire infecting another person with vampirism, or a necromancer fooling around with dark forces in a grave yard. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
