Everyone makes fun of owlbears, until they actually encounter one.
Go into any decent sized tavern and, if it has a troubadour playing, and the troubadour has a decent repertoire, then they will know both The Ballad of Lupina Goofalot as well as The Honey Badger and the Owlbear. Both songs are guaranteed to get crowds roaring with laughter.
Both songs have inadvertently led to more than a few deaths, as many a drunken patron has vowed to his companion to bring back the head of an owlbear after hearing those songs.
The jest quickly fades when the bettor finds himself the target of a raging owl-headed grizzly bearing down on him. Usually the best outcome in such a situation is that the adventurer must dispose of the trousers they shat in while making their escape from the beast. They also lose all appreciation for the two aforementioned songs.
Your trainer and mentor at the Heroes' Academy faced an owlbear in his youth, and was able to kill it. He tells you that if the Brawlers had a spirit animal, it would be the owlbear. A male owlbear can reach fifteen hundred pounds in weight, and stand as tall as ten and a half feet when rearing up on its rear feet. Casual observers might initially think the owlbear is a shambling beast, but one should not be fooled. An owlbear that is enraged or bearing down on its prey moves with "frightening lightning speed" (to borrow a line from The Ballad of Lupina Goofalot). All its senses border on the preternatural, its head can spin around to keep track of its entire surroundings, and for an animal with such a large body, it moves with surprising grace. Worse, it will fight with unwavering ferocity until it draws its last breath, seemingly unaware of any pain inflicted on it.
In short, an owlbear is everything a true brawler aspires to be.
As it happens, you've heard tales of a particularly large owlbear
