"Unless you're trying to catch flies, close your mouth," said the cloaked figure next to you.
"Oh, sorry," you said. "Taren Feldrake."
"Wabu," the figure said, extending a scaly hand that had some claws on it.
You took another look, and realized that what you were looking at was one of the turtle/tortoise-like folk known as Tortles. "Um, nice to meet you." You accepted their hand, and shook it. Then, something nagged at you. "Wait, you wouldn't happen to be Wabu Hardshell? The Necromancer?"
"That is me," said Wabu.
"You saved Sir. Trean and Lady Ginare when they were attacked by bandits. Then there was the Black Dragon of Tersan, you stopped them without even using a spell."
Wabu chuckled, and tapped a staff he'd been holding onto against the wall. "Sometimes knocking sense into someone is just as good as using a fireball, and sometimes better." He looked at the path Arnin had taken. "Be careful, young one. That one is not what he seems to be."
"What are you talking about?" you asked. "Arnin's a great hero!"
"And why is that?" Wabu asked. "I worked with him on a job once. Something happened, and for the life of me, I can't figure it out."
"What happened?" you asked.
"It was a hundred years ago, and involved a demon of some sort," said Wabu. "I was younger at the time. Mixed party, like most of them - fighter, wizard, healer, thief, and a few others. Different races as well. Good friends we were. Broke bread and drank many wineskins together. Even the monk and druid loosened up a bit, and at least told some good stories. Anyways, we had a job. We encountered the demon, fought them, and then Arnin showed up. After that, things get fuzzy. I seem to remember it one way, with him saving us, but when I dream about it, the demon's all but beaten before he showed up. There was a bright light, that much I do remember. Next thing I clearly remember, the demon was gone, me and my friends were on the ground injured, and there he was, claiming to have killed the demon."
"Wait, are you trying to say that Arnin's some kind of phony?" you asked.
Wabu shrugged. "I just find it odd. I'm not the only one thing sort of thing has happened to. I've talked to a few others. There's a certain amount of consistency - flash of light, memories saying one thing, dreams showing another. It's hard to prove. Also, its possible that my mind is playing tricks on me in my old age. I keep records about my and other folks encounters though."
"Why haven't you told others about it?" you asked.
"I would have sounded like a rookie who was upset over being rescued by a legend," said Wabu. "That and everyone thinks of him as incorruptible, which is foolish. We all have some kind of darkness within ourselves, which we must be careful of. If I can find proof, now that's a different matter."
"So, what now?" you asked.
"Well.......
