Your heart beat a mile a minute as the imposing girl carried you off. “Uh Oh, I think there is some paperwork we have to fir…” One look from Layla quickly shut your mouth. She dangled you from her finger for a few steps before gently nesting you in her open palm. Your brief vision of the ground told you that simply enjoying the ride was all that could be done. You gently rubbed the back of your neck as you watched your office wall vanish into the distance.
It wasn’t a bad trip. It was honestly really nice to see the rest of the campus away from your lonely office. Woman of all shapes and sizes went about their business. But none compared to your designated outré chauffeur. Her soft palm smelled gently of lotion. you wished you could at least read her face. The survival instinct that had kept you relatively safe throughout your life waved every flag it could. But… come now. No sense it judging a book by its cover right.
Layla looked down for a moment and you made eye contact. You couldn’t help but shiver as the faintest hint of a smile creped onto her face.
Finally, the two of you arrived in what looked to be an alley way between several buildings. There were two stories to each building with numbers placed above each door. The heavy foot falls of boot on metal echoed out as she climbed a fire escape-esk set of stairs towards a second story door. “Where are we?” you asked with a tone that had been thoroughly mixed in a blender with the emotions of excitement and utter dread.
“My dorm. You said you help students and faculty. My problem is here.” She stated.
“But uhh… isn’t it a bit…” Part of your mind pushed for some type of escape. You ended up with the lame line. “I mean I’m a stranger.”
“I only met the plumber yesterday and still let them in.” She stated.
You worked a hand through your hair. “I mean I don’t have any of my gear…”
“It’s a Manuel labor job…” She arched an eyebrow. Her indifference shifted slightly as her mouth formed a frown. “You are suddenly making a whole lot of excuses for someone who was ‘happy to help me’ just a few minutes ago.” Her voice dipped into a disappointed whisper.
You arched your back and quickly put on a brave face. “No no! I’m fully here to help. Just uh… Well as I said I didn’t get many jobs. I just want to make sure I do my best!” You forced a loud chuckle!
Layla’s frown twisted into a genuine smile. “Good.” She slid an ID card against the door handle and entered. The dorm was pretty standard; A main living area with couches and a TV setup; A kitchen off to the side; Then finally a further hallway back to what you assumed to be the bed rooms. The place was lightly decorated with moody gothic like trinkets and bobbles. One thing of note was a string of party story brand Halloween bats against one of the far walls. They hung over something that had been covered up by a brown tarp.
You were then deposited next to the TV stand where you heaved a massive sigh of relief. Amongst all the oddities the day had brought you. Something big bulky and familiar set before you now. A big bundle of wires. Layla gently removed her boots and plopped her shapely rear down. “Judging by that look on your face. I take it I don’t have to tell you what I need your help with?” She asked. You returned her question with a wide grin as you rolled up of your sleeves. “You don’t even have to say a word… But just to make sure we are clear. I take it you want my little body to help you get all these cords set up without making a great big mess?” Her usual stone face broke into a small smile. “Exactly.”
Finally a long while later you had almost finished. Layla had stepped out for a moment to get you some lunch. You were just needing to plug in one last power cable. But the extension under the stand was already full. Your eyes returned to the corner of the room with the bats. Down next to the tarp covered furniture you spied a open power socket. Heaving the last plug across the carpeted floor you were able to slot it in. You clapped your hands at a job well done and felt a great warmth in your heart. However, your attention was then drawn to a back corner of the tarp that wasn’t fully pulled down. You could not help yourself and looked.
A: Your blood ran cold as you saw the clean white bars of a new hamster cage. You could see a full food bowl and water jug. But no pet was inside.
B: You feel a sense of confusion as you see what would normally be the front door of a doll house. A piece of paper stuck out of the mail box weirdly it was normally sized for you and had a list of names on it?
C: You saw something else? Or perhaps Layla returns in time to stop you? or perhaps an unknown roommate enters the story? Or time rewinds to some mishap during the TV set up process? Writers’ choice.
