Professor Larson nodded. "Well, that's a pretty broad answer, but I'll take it. Yes, nuclear proliferation played a major role in what we now think of as the Cold War."
At that moment, several things clicked into place for Tom. First, his history professor wasn't messing with him. She didn't seem the type to accept clearly-fake answers as a joke. Second, he hadn't been transported to another dimension where the Civil War started early and the Founding Fathers were less formal in their naming conventions. Third, it seemed that any answer he gave was the right answer. The next question was, how far did this go?
Professor Larson continued to talk. "--pre-Columbian civilization in America isn't something one can cover in a single course, much less a week, but this is just an introductory class." She began writing on the chalkboard with curly white script. Tom had an idea.
"That chalk is actually blue," he whispered. Over a few seconds, the color of the chalk gradually faded to a pleasant, sky-blue hue, as though the color sliders on reality had been shifted. That settled that. It was time for his next test.
"Now, while modern culture places the majority of indigenous empires in Central and South America, urbanization extended up north, including settlements like Cahokia and--"
That's not a chalkboard, it's a whiteboard, and she's using blue marker.
Before Tom's eyes, the chalkboard faded from existence, and the scratching of chalk against slate was replaced by the squeaking of a marker on a whiteboard. The deep-blue ink left curly loops on the board.
So that settled it. Tom's very thoughts could change reality. They could even change the past. Those were his initial tests out of the way. Next up was...
