"Yes, mam. I'll be right there," Marcus said, hanging up his cell phone. Marcus was very much used to saying 'yes' to whatever it was that was asked of him. His buddies even called him a 'yes' man. Especially when it came to his work, he always complied with a request, no matter how ridiculous. And sometimes in politics, he'd learned that it could be quite ridiculous. He had spent many a days bringing bagels and coffee in for coworkers, with barely enough time to get one for himself. Marcus was someone who clearly put everyone else's interests first, which can be a great quality, but sometimes he ignored his own wants and desires. He couldn't remember the last time he went on a date or hung out with friends for more than a couple hours. He always seemed he was hurried off to go somewhere, and his social life pretty much revolved around his work, having to attend banquets and other events like it on almost a nightly basis. But that's what drove Marcus. He wanted to make something notable of himself and serve his city.
Marcus rushed to grab his coat, it was a surprisingly day in late April. "Where are you off to, Marc?" asked Abby, another intern in the office. She had pretty auburn hair tied back into a bun and thin-framed glasses. Nobody else in the office called Marcus by any nicknames except for Abby. The two had grown close in the past few months since their program started.
"Shelly needs me to get to the printers for the pamphlets for the fundraiser tonight," he replied. He buttoned up his coat trying to ignore that it was a little more snug that he remembered.
"What about lunch?" she said. "You said we could check out that new Thai place." She looked disappointed but was used to this. Marcus had proven himself willing to say yes to everything and that meant he was often whisked off by the internship coordinators.
"Might not have time. Maybe I'll grab some fast food again," he replied, as he gathered his belongings. "I'll make it up to you. Promise."
"At least take a doughnut or something. You never make time for yourself, Marc," she suggested pointing over to the box of doughnuts. He complied by grabbing a couple on his way out. She sighed after he left.
"I'll see you tonight," he said, referring to the fundraiser.
