Bernadetta’s heart stopped for a moment as she looked at the massive figure in the doorway. All that money spent on impassable doors went to waste from a careless mistake such as not double checking the locks. As reassuring as the sight of Professor Byleth was, Bernadetta’s new size made everything terrifying. All the effort the professor went through to get Bernie to warm up to her was now gone.
The shrunken girl squeaked and scurried under her covers. It actually surprised her how easily she transitioned from the life of a hibernating bear to one of a mouse.
“Bernadetta?” The now booming voice called.
The tiny girl declined to answer, not wanting to be found out. Her mind raced at the punishments she would be in for if she were caught this early into her new lifestyle.
What if the professor makes me go into class like this? What if she makes me train like this? What if she’s just so mad that she crushes me in her hand? What if she makes me talk to Hubert?
She began to hyperventilate at the thoughts, regretting every life choice that went into this decision. She closed her eyes and began to think happy thoughts, including the main inspiration to shrink herself.
There was a series of children’s novels she grew infatuated with from being locked up in her room. It featured a race of tiny people living inside the walls with a charmingly rustic life of borrowing items from the giant people that were unaware of their existence. Though, if there was one thing she truly latched onto, it was their number one rule:
Never talk to humans.
The thought of life as a borrower managed to calm her down. All she had to do was escape the professor’s sights for now, and she would be free to live her new life. It would be easy. Her neighbors in her dorm building seemed like all she needed to survive and even thrive.
Annette to the left of her dorm was just as prone to late night snacking, especially sweets. Given her size, she didn’t need much to borrow. She could nab supplies from either Dorothea or Petra’s room to her right. And, at the very end of the hall, Linhardt’s room was basically a second library.
“Huh,” Byleth said to herself, eying the stack of freshly checked out books and snacks. “It seems Bernadetta’s planning on hiding away again.”
