Guilt gripped at Mercedes heart as she prayed. The day's battle served to show her how little she could do. While injury in was unavoidable it was another thing to have someone get injured protecting you. If only she'd been stronger then the professor wouldn't have gotten hurt. Sure he would be fine after a few days rest, but that wasn't the point.
After 5 years of constant battles and gaining experience, she expected much more of herself. Instead she received an all too true reminder of how far she had to go. If only she had the power to truly make a difference. If she did then this war with the Empire would be concluded and everyone could go back to their normal lives.
That sounded wonderful. To be able to live a normal life. No more having to sleep with one eye open and wondering if tomorrow is your last day on earth. Mercedes was all too thankful that the goddess deemed it wasn't her or her allies time. There was still so much to see and so much to do. Right now though she had a prayer to finish.
"Oh divine Goddess you have been so kind to my friends and I thus far. Though I have never asked for much, just this one time I would like to make a selfish request. I ask of you to give me the strength necessary to end this conflict."
It could've been her imagination or perhaps the draft, but for some reason she felt a small tingle run down her spine. With her concentration broken, Mercdes quickly scanned around the area, only to find herself alone. After a calming sigh she finished her prayer and left to her makeshift quarters for the night.
