"Actually, there was something I wanted to show you," you said, your hand drifting to the remote in your pocket. "Do you think we could talk inside?" Even though there didn't seem to be anyone else around, considering you were about to reveal a remote that seemingly defied the laws of reality, you felt it would probably be best to ensure your privacy before you said anything.
Avril raised an eyebrow, but ultimately gave a nod. "Sure," she replied, beginning to lead the way inside. "My parents aren't home at the moment, so we've got the whole place to ourselves. Well, besides Maria, but she's not going to mind if we want a little privacy."
"Sounds perfect."
With that, Avril lead you inside as the two of you idly chatted about how your day had been, though you obviously left out any details regarding your chance find this afternoon. For now, this was just an ordinary visit to your girlfriend's house. Arvil seemed to have gotten the picture that whatever it was you wanted to show her needed to be private though, and so instead of stopping by the living room, lead you up to her bedroom and closed the door behind you once you were inside.
"Alright," she said, hands on her hips with a curious grin on her face. "Just what is it you wanted to show me that's so important you couldn't just show me outside?"
"You're never gonna believe this," you said, reaching into your pocket and pulling out the remote. "But it's this."
"A... TV remote? With only one button?"
"It might look like that, but apparently it's called the "Remote of Swapping". If you press the button, time freezes, and then you can swap things with people around you."
Arvil's expression was growing more and more incredulous by the second. "Swap things? Like what?"
"I, uh, I don't know. Stuff like body parts, I think. The manual didn't actually say, and I haven't tried swapping anything yet."
"Riiight."
"But get this," you quickly interject, trying to make yourself not look like a gullible idiot right now. "I pressed the button earlier, and time actually froze! I just cancelled it before I swapped anything."
Avril let out a sigh and shook her head, before looking at you with a confused smile. "This sounds way too ridiculous to be true, but... you have no reason to be lying to be about something that sounds like an obvious lie."
"So you believe me?"
"Well, let's not go that far yet. This could just be a prank. Why are you telling me about this anyway?"
"I thought it might be nice for us to use it together. I mean, the remote makes it so no one notices the swaps unless they're holding the remote, so I thought it'd be fun to have someone I can share this with that can actually see what's changing, and there's no one I'd rather share it with than you."
"Aw," Avril said, touched by your admittedly strange gesture. "Alright, let's say I believe you for the time being. Maybe we should actually test that the remote can do what it says first."
"Alright. What do you want to swap?" you ask, holding the remote out to her so she could take a hold of it.
"Huh? You mean, between us?" Avril asks, her mood suddenly flipping to become more anxious.
"Uh, yeah? I mean, we're the only two people here right now."
"Uh, okay, um. I just think that if this machine really can stop time and, uh, break reality like that, it seems a bit risky to just use it on ourselves like that."
"Well, from what the manual said, I think the person pressing the button has to be the one that swaps, but if you're worried about it, you don't have to be part of the first swap if you don't want to be. Maria's still home, I could always try swapping with her. ...Or I guess Missy, maybe."
"Missy!? My dog Missy?"
"Uh, yeah. The manual didn't exactly say the target had to be human, it was just "who you want to swap with." So the remote would probably work on her as well."
"And you don't see anything wrong with that? Swapping parts with my dog?"
"Hey, it was just a suggestion. If you don't want me to, I won't." Admittedly, you were a little curious about whether the remote would work on non-human targets, but right now, you just needed to test the actual swapping capabilities of the remote. After all, you wanted Avril to be fully on board, and you were admittedly curious yourself about what swapping would be like.
Avril could only sigh and shake her head at the fact that you'd even been considering Missy as a target. "Oh Michael, what am I going to do with you?"
