The organisation known as Cadmus called their eventual destroyer Project Doomsday. It was created using DNA from not only the most powerful predators on Earth but also of their Kryptonian nemesis - in fact it began originally as a clone of a Kryptonian so that they could instil in it a weakness to Kryptonite so that when it outlived its usefulness, they could destroy it. It wouldn't be until it was too late that they would realise that it could adapt even to the radioactive rock.
