Chapter #3

A scavengers discovery

by: The Languid Lizard Author IconMail Icon
You had been wandering through the city for some time now, scraping away at whatever you could find. A convenience store here, a grocery store there, but with hardly any luck. With winter coming around, you felt yourself becoming desperate, but at least safe in the knowledge that you we're possibly the last person in the city right now. Most had gone country side, after the virus came, but you were the adventurous type, and realizing that the plague virus that had nearly destroyed the earth was all but impossible to catch now, you had ventured forth after years of country living to the large city you used to live in. It was your third month here, and while there was no one else around you could tell, there were plenty of animals.

Deer, rabbits, foxes, wolves, most of the animals one would expect in a forest or wooded region. This concrete jungle had reverted to concrete forest instead. What make-shift tools you had gave you no luck as you kept missing your quarry, the country living having softened you up and hardly prepared you for the harsh reality of fending for yourself. After going through another empty store, all you could really find was a couple of cans of vegetables, some crackers that were most likely stale beyond reason. Stashing them in your pack and looking for anything to drink, you find a bottle of diet soda lodged under a tipped over refrigerator. It would have to do.

Standing back outside, you gaze up at the sky, realizing the sun would come down soon, but it seemed like it was always setting between all the high-rises around you. If only you could get past the several downed buildings that blocked off more of the city. Walking more and more through the ever colder city, your glad you found at least one clothes shop that had an adequate selection of coats and boots. Slung over your shoulder, carrying everything you could carry, you make your way over to one of the down buildings, seeing a overpass sliced right off. You gaze at the sight, mouth open, wondering how something so incredibly destructive could have happened all those years ago. Half the buildings were covered in foliage, now changing color and falling off. You eye something to your delight: a service ladder hanging off the edge of the overpass, knocked down by the ancient destruction that had happen. It looked like a climb.

After a vigorous, dangerous climb, you had finally reached your way to the top of the overpass, the crumbled siding giving you the opportune path to walk on the road. A dangerous jump was ahead, yet, if you made it, you'd get access to more of the city ahead of you. You held your breath, thinking on it, but the sun lowering more and more was enough of a reason to get over your fear and aim for a small tangle of wires that you saw hanging. Electricity had flowed through them once, but now, no more. You keep your eyes locked on them as you try and gauge the jump. Holding your breath, closing your eyes, you swallow a gulp of frigid air, before you bolt towards the edge of the broken overpass. Heart pounding, and packing bouncing back and forth, you leap.

Microseconds feel like hours, as your reach your hands out, aiming for the wires. The wires move! You gaze at them as they spread a bit, then whip back together, right onto your flying body! You gasp, as you feel your feet being tangled in the mess of wires. You swing upside down, as your moment moves you forward. The jagged glass of the broken window quickly coming up had your eyes widen, even upside down you knew you were in trouble. Bending forward, grabbing at the wires as wildly as possible, you manage to slow yourself down a bit, just barely being scratched by the glass. You swing backwards, away from the windows. You swing back and forth for a few moments, catching your breath, and always holding it when you come close to the glass, before you stabilize.

Quickly working your hands on your feet, you untangle some of the wires and get yourself free. With a heavy sigh, you climb the wires up and up, knowing they'd lead to the top of the building, your arms growing tired with each tug. After a couple of minutes, you toss your pack up over the edge of the building and yourself next, finding a large, stable length of solid material, able to walk across and over to the other overpass. Catching your breath, you calmly stroll down the large line of the building. Looking left and right at the glass windows. Finally, you reach the other side of the fallen building, the overpass connecting to it rather conveniently.

Sitting on the edge, you plop yourself down, and look at the sun, coming down over the lane that opened up to a large park. You hadn't seen a park like such in a while, and it was completely overgrown with its own vegetation. The sun finally set, and the orange, purple glow of the sky was cast over you. You sigh in contentment, at least enjoying this. Pulling out a can of vegetables, you bring out your knife, and stab at the top of it, draining a bit of the canned juices out, seeing no black spots or anything else nasty. You smile, and start working at the rest of the can, when you suddenly feel a rumble again. You look behind you to see if the building was shifting, or if another building was falling, but you soon realize that the rumbling was coming from in front of you. You stand up, and walk onto the overpass, looking over the edge that had blocked your view of the street.

You gasp, looking forward, as a rising mass started to stand up, humanoid in figure, It looked like:
