Chapter #7

"I'm not really Beverly!"

    by: PrivateValentine Author IconMail Icon
There's a moment of silence following Beverly's proclamation. You blink. She blinks back, her eyes widening once again, and she takes a hasty couple of steps backwards.

"...You're what?" you say.

Your supposedly-not-sister trembles. She's definitely not acting like Beverly. "I-I'm not your sister!" she repeats.

"Then...who are you?" you ask cautiously. You're not sure why you're humoring her when it's easy enough to put on an act, but instinct tells you to at least ask the question.

The girl takes another deep breath. "...T-Tracy!"

Your head tilts to the side, and your brow furrows. Of all people, she'd pretend to be Tracy? Maybe it's just because she saw how weird Tracy was yesterday. "...Bev, look, this is weird, don't--"

"I'm not!" she says, more forcefully. "I don't get it either, Tim, but...just hear me out for a minute, okay?" She goes around you to shut the door and gently ushers you a step further into the room, where you take a seat on the foot of Beverly's bed.

"O-kay," you say. "So...what am I supposed to be hearing?"

"Look, I know it sounds weird, and crazy, and I thought about not telling you, but...I-I don't know, now I've told you!"

"Okay, but...how? Why? What?" you say, looking for more detail.

"If I knew that, I'd have my normal body back," says Beverly bitterly. "All I know is we were supposed to go on a date yesterday, but when I got to the door there was...something, and then I was up here."

You sigh. "That's not the most convincing story."

"I know! I know, but...but...! Oh, forget this!" With that, she takes two determined steps towards you, grabs your face, and pulls you into a kiss.

"Mph!" you grunt in shock, pulling back immediately. "What the fuck?!"

"There! Is that something your sister would ever do? Like, EVER?"

"I, buh, wha...?" you stutter in a mix of confusion and annoyance. "I-I mean, no, not in a million years but...what the fuck?"

"So do you believe me?"

"I..." You doubt Beverly would ever do anything like that, even to prove a point. Not even as a joke. But the proposition itself is so surreal, part of you still doubts it. Still, you find yourself much more open to it than you were a few moments ago. "...Alright, let's just say for the moment that I do. Then what?"

"Well...I-I don't know," says your "sister." You're not sure what to think of her any more. "I mean...assuming it was her, and I hope to god it was her or we'll never figure this out, then she had to have...done something, right?"

"...I think I get what you're saying," you say. "So we should try and figure out how she did it, right?"

"Yes! Exactly!"

"...Alright, well, then...let's look around. Maybe we'll find...something."

"Okay!"

So you and Tracy--or at least, the body of Beverly inside which you assume is Tracy--start to look around Beverly's room. The problem is, the bookshelves are stacked with what appear to be spellbooks of black magic, but you were with your sister when she bought some of them, so you know those ones are fake. Some of the books you have no idea, but you decide to start looking with the last one you remember seeing her come into the house with, and whatever ones you don't recognize. Tracy, meanwhile, starts searching elsewhere in the room, pulling out drawers, digging through Beverly's storage chest, and basically checking everything that isn't a book.

Eventually...
