To the rescue...!

by: The forge of shadows Author IconMail Icon
The greatest of care was to be taken, Lisa expected nothing in life to be left to chance and expirements doubly so. In her mind, fate and destiny were purely fallacies that only the misinformed latched onto. She'd chart a path with her own hands and she would have it no other way!

However...

"Oh this is so cool Lis'!"

Automotive mechanics were not a strong suit of hers, but Lana was more than expertised in that area. For the grand total of a crisp five dollar bill she'd acquired a... modestly used automobile from the junkyard. Whilst she may not have had the mind for this Lana did, her knowledge in mechanical engineering as well as independent research of her own lead her to believe that the engine of this vehicle was still in some form of working order. However other factors.... primarily wheels and some major cosmetic repairs needed, would not allow this thing to drive of its own power.

"Indeed elder sister, happy birthday!" Lisa said cheerfully, leaving Lana confused.

"But that's not till june..."

"Oh..." Lisa faltered, in truth she didn't know her siblings birthdays by heart, rather relying on her family to remind her of such events. "Well...happy early birthday! I do hope that the restoration of this vehicle will bring you joy." she tried to bounce back. Although a tad confused, Lana was giddy regardless of the circumstances. She was so filled with joy that the resulting hug from her came as a result to both her and Lisa who let out a small shriek from being hoisted up so suddenly.

"Ah! Sorry Lis'! " she said setting her back down "It's just this is so cool!"

"A-agreed..." Lisa said slightly deterred "Well what are we waiting for? Let's "get to fixin' this heap o' junk" ". Again Lana was at loss for words, whenever Lisa tried to talk like that it made her worried. But then again...

"Yeah! C'mon you can help me climb in under the hood." And so it began... the journey too getting this junkyard jalopy to actually run was not an easy one. Lana doubled down on her usual dumpster diving to find everything she needed. Lisa helped by finding some semi good wheels for the thing, that Lana jumped at when she brought them to her. Surprisingly their parents didn't notice the work they were doing. Mostly because they never really had to go to their garage and partly when you have 11 kids some trouble makers need a constant eye on them while others could be left to their own devices. Sometimes they'd get one of their sisters checking in on what they were doing but for the most part the family didn't know what they were doing.

All though the process of the restoration Lana almost constantly praised Lisa. Her gratitude almost showed no bounds, at dinner she'd hold back on loading her plate just so Lisa would get an extra bite. Or at family arguments she'd seem to take her side on whatever the discussion was. Heck even when they were riding in the family's primary vehicle, vanzilla, she'd guard the cherished sweet spot for her. It did spark the occasional question as to why she was doing this for her, or in Lola's words "why are kissing her butt so much?". But her answer was always the same "she's actually pretty cool guys".

This complicated matters when it came to Lisa's plan. While she normally put up a very sterile and stoic demeanor she was not like most would assume heartless. She only acted that way for the sake of her research but she really did care for her family and all this praise from Lana was genuinely rubbing off on her and appreciating her as possibly her favorite sister.

Which only made it worse that for the sake of her experiment the car would have to be 'stolen'. Without her knowing, Lisa installed remote controlled apparatus' in the vehicle's dashborard control under Lana's nose. Thus when the car finally roared to life 2 weeks later, that smile on Lana's face stung a bit to see, through her efforts Lana would have to watch her baby crash from grand theft auto.

"Oh my gosh yes!!! She lives Lis' she lives!" Lana proclaimed happily.

"Yes Lana she indeed does." Lisa said, trying her best not to let on anything, mostly trying not to sound guilty.

"We gotta show this to everybody tomorrow, imagine the look on mom and dad's faces when they see this!" every word of pride stung like a wasp to Lisa's being. This would hurt tomorrow, she could already imagine Lana's crying and the weight of heart growing in the slumps of her stomach.

"I agree older... i mean Lana." Lisa said putting on the best smile she could. That small smile was the payment for the biggest hug she had ever received from Lana.

"Lisa, thank you so much."and that small statement almost made her bite her tongue to suppress the magnitude of emotions she was feeling.

"Your welcome Lana." she said before her sister broke away from her. They walked through their moonlit backyard to their house and went to bed, one's heart giddly afloat and the other sinking into the bottom of their bed.

The preceding day started bright and loud as always, Lana had woken up to Lola starting a fuss about Lori and Leni stealing her special shampoo she used for pageants. Unfortunately for the little motorhead she had gotten caught in the middle of the commotion, which gave Lisa her gambit to set her plan in motion. Hurrying to Lynn and Lucy's room she found her gothic sister in her coffin reading.

"Um Lucy?" Lisa spoke, her spooky sister looking in her direction.

"Something the matter?"

"My favorite lab rat escaped last night."

"Do you need help finding it?" Lucy asked, to which Lisa shook her head.

"No i found it... in the middle of the street."

"O-oh" Lucy responded understanding the implication.

"Yes... seeing as how it was my favorite i wish to ask of your services. Could you please give it its final vows" as if like a specter, Lucy rose from her casket

"Of course, do you have the departed in the house?"

"Um no it's still in the middle of the street, i feel uneasy moving it." Lisa explained.

"I understand, i'll meet you outside then."

"Thank you Lucy." Lisa said walking off to her room. Waiting a few minutes to ensure that Lucy had left for the front of the house. Picking up a remote she had handcrafted for the jalopy she then went to Lincoln's room.

"Elder brother i require your assistance." she said flatly, being able to ask Lincoln something more naturally than she could Lucy. Lincoln was laying on his bed on his computer when Lisa had barged in, not all to shocked that one of his sisters had barged in but still a little alarmed.

"Um okay what's up?"

"I was experimenting with a model plane and it unfortunately got caught in a tree. Can you help me get it out?" she asked

"Oh yeah sure."

"Perfect, please go tot he front of the house. I'll go retrieve something as to aid you in this endeavor." she said, leaving without another word. Hurrying down the hall, greeted by the sound of the argument Lana was stuck in the middle of, and down the stairs she could see Lucy on the sidewalk in front of the house patiently waiting for her. All the while the sound of Lincoln's footsteps pressed her to hurry on. Rushing to the garage she opened the door haphazardly and started the jalopy. The sound of the front door closing told her that all the pieces were on the game board. For a spilt second she held the controller in hand and silently let out

"I'm sorry Lana." with the press of a control stick the car peeled out of the garage. A screen on the controller allowed her live footage from the front of the car, so when she made that right turn and saw Lucy, completely unaware of the car's prescience, she floored it.

"LUCY WATCH OUT!" Lincoln cried out and then....
